Are you attempting to teach your Rajapalayam to sit? The talent of sitting up is quite easily taught to little dogs, yet much bigger dogs are a different story. It’s difficult for them to maintain their balance.
Teach Your Rajapalayam to Sit: Readiness
Sitting is one of the most basic techniques that you should teach to a Rajapalayam and provides the foundation for a large number of other skills. In order to train a Rajapalayam to sit up, prepare some snacks as a perk, and set the Rajapalayam on her rump in a corner, so that she won’t be able to fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no room to lose balance.
Teach Your Rajapalayam to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Words
Stop her from tilting to the front by keeping one hand beneath her chin and using the other hand hold the treat above the Rajapalayam’s face. Keep saying clearly and intelligibly, “sit up.” Do not make her sit too long at one time, but do repeat the lesson regularly and reward her regularly with lots of adoration and treats.
Teach Your Rajapalayam to Sit: Help Her Balance
In her 1st lesson she will require quite a bit of support from you to keep her from falling forward, but as she gains control of the stabilizing muscles and sees what you want, she will count less upon your hand to hold her in position. Gradually, you can give your Rajapalayam less help and support til you will basically have to keep one hand in position two or three inches from her neck or chin, to be ready to stop her from falling forward; in the future you can withdraw this hand entirely and just simply dangle the reward right above the level of your Rajapalayam’s head.
Teach Your Rajapalayam To Sit: Remove the Assistance Eventually
With consistent training your Rajapalayam will stay seated for a good while after you command her. The next step is she should be set against a wall, so as to offer her support for her back. Immediately after she has picked up this and can maintain her position effortlessly, practice with her up against chair legs, pillows or other objects that give her less and less support. Eventually she will be able to sustain her stability and sit up without needing anything to lean on.
Teach Your Rajapalayam to Sit: Putting It All Together
During all these lessons the command "sit up" will have been instilled upon her psyche by constant repetition. Last is the final lesson to teach your Rajapalayam to sit up right after she hears the command. There's a good chance, if she has been carefully instructed, you will simply have to summon her out into the room, display to her a reward, hold it up a suitable distance from the ground, say "sit up or sit" and she'll obey. Then you'll give her the snack while still in place.
The only criteria for perfection is to rehearse with your Rajapalayam multiple times a day until she sits when told and without being shown a snack; give her the treats only after she has complied with the command.
Teach Your Rajapalayam Other Tricks
You have now the technique for teaching your Rajapalayam many other tricks. She can now be taught to beg by moving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she will move in rhythm with yours. She also can learn to salute by bringing one paw to the side of her head, or to hold a toy in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other articles of clothing.
While instructing a Rajapalayam to accept being clothed, don't try to get her to wear too many things at the same time. Try at first with a hat. Soon after she becomes adjusted to that you can put on a coat and gradually introduce her to more clothes.
