Protect her from tilting towards you by maintaining 1 hand beneath her chin and with your other hand dangle her treat above her nose. Keep repeating distinctly and intelligibly, “sit.” Don’t force her to sit up too long at one time, but repeat the training often and reward her often with a lot of appreciation and treats.

In her first lesson your Pont-Audemer Spaniel will demand quite a bit of help and support from you to stop her from tumbling forward, but as she gains control of her muscles and understands what you want her to do, she will rely less and less upon your hand to hold her in position. Gradually, you can give her less support till you will just have to keep one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her chin or neck, to be in place to prevent her from falling forward; later you will be able to take away the hand completely and merely hold the reward right over the height of her head.

After regular practice your Pont-Audemer Spaniel will sit up for a long time after you tell her to. Then she should be set against the wall, so as to provide her help for her back. After she has figured out this and can maintain her place easily, rehearse with her using chair legs, pillows or other things that give her less and less help. Subsequently she will figure out how to preserve her equilibrium and sit without having anything to rest against.

Throughout all this training the phrase "sit up" will have been instilled upon her mind by constant repetition.
