Teach Your Papillon to Sit: Preparation
Sitting is one of the very first skills that should be taught to a Papillon and lays the ground work for various other tricks. Teach Your Papillon to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Words
Stop her from tilting towards you by securing your hand under her chin and with the other hand hold her treat above the Papillon’s face. Keep repeating intelligibly and clearly, “sit up.” Do not make her sit up for too long at one time, but repeat the lesson regularly and reward her regularly with lots of cheers and treats.
Teach Your Papillon to Sit: Help Her Balance
During her beginner lesson she will demand considerable help and support from you to keep her from falling forward, but as she gains control of the stabilizing muscles and makes sense of what you want her to do, she’ll rely less on your hand to hold her steady. Then you can gradually give your Papillon less support until you’ll merely have to keep one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her chin or neck, to be set to stop her falling forward; later you may withdraw your hand completely and merely hold the reward right above the level of her face.
Teach Your Papillon To Sit: Remove the Aids Gradually
After regular training she will stay seated well after you make her. Then she should be set up against your wall, so as to offer her help for her back only. After she has taken in this and can keep her position effortlessly, rehearse with her using chair legs, cushions or other things that offer her less and less help. At some point she will understand how to preserve her equilibrium and sit up without having something to rest against.
