Are you trying to teach your Landseer to sit? The technique of sitting up is quite easily taught to smaller dogs, however bigger canines are another story. It’s challenging for them to sustain their balance.
Teach Your Landseer to Sit: Preparation
Sitting up is one of the fundamental skills that should be taught to a Landseer and provides the groundwork for several other techniques. In order to train a Landseer to sit up, prep some treats as a reward, and place the Landseer on her haunches in a corner, to ensure that she can’t fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no space to stumble.
Teach Your Landseer to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Sound of The Words
Keep her from tilting forward by holding one hand under her chin and using your other hand dangle her snack above your Landseer’s nose. Keep repeating deliberately and clearly, “sit up.” Don’t make her sit up for too long at any one time, but do repeat the training frequently and reward her often with plenty of praise and treats.
Teach Your Landseer to Sit: Help Her Keep Her Balance
In the 1st lesson your Landseer will need significant support from you to stop her from pitching forward, but as she gains more control of the balancing muscles and learns what you want her to do, she will count less and less upon your hand to keep her steady. Then you can gradually give your Landseer less support until you’ll simply have to leave one hand in position two or three inches from her chin or neck, to be ready to stop her falling forward; later on you will be able to withdraw your hand completely and simply hold the reward right over the height of her face.
Teach Your Landseer To Sit: Remove the Aids Incrementally
After steady practice your Landseer will sit up long after you set her up. Afterward she should be set against your wall, so as to give her a support for her back. Only after she has gotten the hang of this and can keep her position easily, rehearse with her using chair legs, cushions or other things that provide her less and less help and support. Sooner or later she will be able to sustain her equilibrium and sit in the absence of something to lean against.
Teach Your Landseer to Sit: Putting It All Together
During all these lessons the phrase "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her psyche by frequent repetition. Last here's the final lesson to teach your Landseer to sit up right after she hears the phrase. There's a great chance, if she has been diligently instructed, you will only have to summon her out in the room, show to her a treat, hold it up a reasonable distance from the ground, say "sit" and she will obey. Then you give her the treat while still in place.
The only necessity for excellence is to train with your Landseer multiple times daily until she will sit up on command and without being shown a snack; give her the snacks only after she has obeyed the command.
Teach Your Landseer Other Tricks
You have now the groundwork for teaching your Landseer many other tricks. She now can learn how to beg by waving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she will move in rhythm with yours. She also can learn to salute by moving one paw to the side of her head, or to hold a toy in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other articles of clothing.
When instructing a Landseer to accept being dressed up, do not try to get her to wear too many clothes at one time. Try at first with a cap. After she becomes adjusted to that you can put on a jacket and gradually introduce her to more garments.
Take joy in "teaching your Landseer the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun at the same time!
