Are you aspiring to teach your Koolie to sit? The technique of sitting up is quite easily taught to petite dogs, yet much larger pooches are another story. It’s difficult for them to sustain their equilibrium.
Teach Your Koolie to Sit: Prep work
Sitting up is one of the first tricks that you should teach to a Koolie and lays the ground work for a large number of other tricks. To train a Koolie to sit up, prepare some snacks as a perk, and put the Koolie on her haunches in a corner, to ensure she won’t be able to fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no room to stumble.
Teach Your Koolie to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Words
Stop her from tilting towards you by holding one hand under her chin and with the second hand hold the reward above the Koolie’s face. Keep repeating distinctly and intelligibly, “sit up.” Don’t make her sit for too long at any one time, but repeat the lesson regularly and reward her regularly with a lot of adoration and treats.
Teach Your Koolie to Sit: Help Her Stay Balanced
Throughout the beginner lesson your Koolie will require significant help from you to keep her from falling forward, but as she gains better control of her muscles and learns what you want her to do, she will depend less on your hand to keep her in position. Gradually, you can give your Koolie less support until you’ll only have to keep one hand in position two or three inches from her neck or chin, to be waiting to stop her from falling forward; later on you will be able to withdraw this hand altogether and just suspend the treat right over the height of her head.
Teach Your Koolie To Sit: Remove the Assistance Progressively
After consistent training your Koolie will sit up for a good while after you get her to sit. The next step is she should be set against your wall, so as to offer her assistance for her back only. Only after she has mastered this and can keep her place easily, rehearse with her against chair legs, cushions or other items that provide her less and less assistance. Ultimately she will learn how to preserve her balance and sit without something to rest against.
Teach Your Koolie to Sit: Putting It All Together
During the course of all this training the words "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her mind through frequent repetition. Now here's the final lesson to teach your Koolie to sit up as soon as she hears the phrase. There's a good chance, if she has been carefully instructed, you will only have to get her out into the room, show her a reward, hold it up a reasonable distance from the floor, say "sit up or sit" and she will do so. Then you give her the reward while still in position.
The only prerequisite for flawlessness is to rehearse with her several times a day until she can sit up when commanded to and without being shown a snack; give her the snacks only once she has adhered to the order.
Teach Your Koolie Other Tricks
You have now the method for teaching your Koolie many other skills. She now can be taught to beg by waving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she will move in sync with yours. She also can be taught to salute by bringing one paw to the side of her head, or to keep a wooden pipe in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothing.
In teaching a Koolie to accept being clothed, do not try to make her wear too many garments at the same time. Try her at first with just a cap. Soon after she becomes accustomed to that you can put on a jacket and slowly and gradually introduce her to more clothes.
Take pleasure in "teaching your Koolie the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun at the same time!
