Are you aiming to teach your Elo to sit? The skill of sitting up is easily taught to small dogs, though much bigger pet dogs are a different story. It is tough for them to maintain their equilibrium.
Teach Your Elo to Sit: Groundwork
Sitting up is one of the most basic skills that should be taught to a Elo and lays the groundwork for several other tricks. To train a Elo to sit up, put together some snacks as a reward, and put the Elo on her backside in a corner, to ensure she can not fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no space to lose balance.
Teach Your Elo to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Command
Keep her from pitching to the front by sticking 1 hand under her chin and with the second hand dangle the treat above the Elo’s nose. Keep repeating distinctly and intelligibly, “sit up.” Do not force her to sit for too long at one time, but do repeat the training frequently and reward her regularly with loads of adoration and treats.
Teach Your Elo to Sit: Help Her Balance
In her initial lesson your Elo will require a surprising amount of help from you to prevent her from tumbling forward, but as she gets better control of her muscles and starts to understand what you want her to do, she will count less upon your hand to keep her in position. Gradually, you can give her less help and support until you’ll basically have to maintain one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her chin or neck, to be prepared to stop her from falling forward; in the future you can easily withdraw this hand altogether and just dangle the reward right over the level of her face.
Teach Your Elo To Sit: Remove the Help Gradually
After steady practice she will stay seated long after you make her. Afterward she should be set against a wall, so as to provide her a support for her back only. Soon after she has grasped this and can keep her position easily, rehearse with her using chair legs, cushions or other objects that offer her less and less aid. In time she will be trained to sustain her balance and sit without needing something to lean against.
Teach Your Elo to Sit: Putting It All Together
During all this training the phrase "sit up" will have been instilled upon her mind by persistent repetition. Last comes the final training to teach your Elo to sit up as quickly as she hears the command. There's a good chance, if she has been properly instructed, you will merely have to get her out in the room, show a snack, hold it up a reasonable distance from the floor, say "sit up or sit" and she will obey. Then just give her the snack while still in position.
The only criteria for flawlessness is to rehearse with your Elo multiple times a day until she sits up when commanded to and without being shown a treat; give her the rewards only after she has obeyed the command.
Teach Your Elo Other Tricks
You have now the technique for teaching your Elo many other tricks. She can now learn to beg by moving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she'll move in rhythm with yours. She can also learn to salute by bringing one paw up to the side of her head, or to keep a wooden pipe in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other articles of clothing.
In training a Elo to accept being dressed up, do not try to make her wear too many items at the same time. Try her at first with just a hat. Once she becomes adjusted to that you could put on a jacket and slowly and gradually introduce her to the other clothes.
Appreciate "teaching your Elo the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun along the way!
