Are you attempting to teach your Drentse Patrijshond to sit? The skill of sitting up is regularly taught to pocket-sized dogs, however much bigger doggies are another story. It’s tricky for them to sustain their balance.
Teach Your Drentse Patrijshond to Sit: Foundation
Sitting is one of the most basic tricks that you should teach to your Drentse Patrijshond and forms the ground work for numerous other tricks. In order to train a Drentse Patrijshond to sit up, prepare some snacks as a perk, and place the Drentse Patrijshond on her haunches in a corner, to make sure that she can not fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no space to lose balance.
Teach Your Drentse Patrijshond to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Command
Prevent her from pitching to the front by sticking your hand on her chin and using your other hand hold her treat above your Drentse Patrijshond’s nose. Keep saying deliberately and clearly, “sit.” Don’t force her to sit too long at any one time, but repeat the training routinely and reward her often with plenty of praise and snacks.
Teach Your Drentse Patrijshond to Sit: Help Her Balance
Throughout the very first lesson she will call for a lot of help from you to keep her from pitching forward, but as she gets more control of the balancing muscles and figures out what you want, she’ll depend less upon your hand to hold her steady. Gradually, you can give her less assistance until you will simply have to maintain one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her chin or neck, to be prepared to stop her from falling forward; eventually you can easily take away your hand entirely and simply suspend the treat right over the level of her head.
Teach Your Drentse Patrijshond To Sit: Remove the Aids Gradually
With frequent training she will sit up long after you set her up. The next step is she should be set against a wall, so as to give her a support for her back. Once she has mastered this and can maintain her posture effortlessly, rehearse with her up against chair legs, cushions or other things that give her less and less help and support. Subsequently she will be trained to keep her balance and sit up without needing anything to rest on.
Teach Your Drentse Patrijshond to Sit: Putting It All Together
During all this training the words "sit up" will have been impressed upon her subconscious by persistent repetition. Lastly comes the final lesson to teach your Drentse Patrijshond to sit up immediately after she hears the command. It's highly likely, if she has been carefully taught, you will just have to call her out in the room, reveal to her a reward, hold it up a suitable distance from the floor, say "sit up" and she will do so. Then you give her the treat while still in position.
The only condition for perfection is to rehearse with her several times a day until she sits up when commanded to and without being shown a treat; give her the snacks only after she has obeyed the direction.
Teach Your Drentse Patrijshond Other Tricks
You have now the technique for teaching your Drentse Patrijshond many other skills. She can now learn to beg by waving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she will move in sync with yours. She can also learn to salute by bringing one paw to the side of her head, or to keep an object in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other articles of clothing.
When instructing a Drentse Patrijshond to tolerate being clothed, do not try to make her wear too many clothes at once. Try her at first with just a hat. Only after she gets used to that you can put on a jacket and gradually over time introduce her to the other garments.
