Sitting up is one of the first tricks that should be taught to your Blackmouth Cur and forms the ground work for various other skills. To train a Blackmouth Cur to sit up, prep some treats as a perk, and put your Blackmouth Cur on her rump in a corner, to ensure she is not able to fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no space to stumble.
Teach Your Blackmouth Cur to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Phrase
Stop her from pitching to the front by keeping one hand under her chin and with the other hand hold her treat above the Blackmouth Cur’s face. Keep repeating intelligibly and distinctly, “sit.” Do not force her to sit up for too long at any one time, but do repeat the training frequently and reward her regularly with loads of adoration and treats.
Teach Your Blackmouth Cur to Sit: Help Her Maintain Balance
In the initial lesson she will call for considerable assistance from your hand to stop her from pitching forward, but as she gains better control of her stabilizing muscles and realizes what you want, she will count less and less upon your hand to keep her steady. Then you can gradually give your Blackmouth Cur less help and support til you’ll just have to keep one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her chin or neck, to be waiting to stop her falling forward; later on you might take away this hand altogether and simply hold the reward just over the height of your Blackmouth Cur’s face.
Teach Your Blackmouth Cur To Sit: Remove the Help Gradually
After constant training she will sit up well after you make her. Afterward she should be set against your wall, so as to offer her assistance for her back only. Immediately after she has gotten the knack of this and can hold her position easily, practice with her against chair legs, pillows or other things that give her less and less support. In the end she will get the hang of how to preserve her stability and sit without relying on something to rest against.
Teach Your Blackmouth Cur to Sit: Putting It All Together
Throughout all this training the words "sit up" will have been instilled upon her mind through regular repetition. Last is the final training to teach your Blackmouth Cur to sit up as quickly as she hears the command. Most likely, if she has been diligently instructed, you will simply have to get her out into the room, display a treat, hold it up a reasonable distance from the floor, say "sit up" and she will obey. Then give her the snack while still in position.
The only necessity for excellence is to train with her several times daily until she can sit up when commanded to and without being shown a snack; give her the snacks only once she has complied with the direction.
Teach Your Blackmouth Cur Other Tricks
You have now the foundation for teaching your Blackmouth Cur many other tricks. She now can learn how to beg by moving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she'll move in coordination with yours. She also can learn to salute by moving one paw up to the side of her head, or to keep something in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other clothes.
When teaching a Blackmouth Cur to accept being dressed up, don't try to make her wear too many things at the same time. Try at first with just a hat. After she becomes used to that you can put on a coat and slowly introduce her to the other clothing.
