To teach your West Siberian Laika tricks, even the easy ones, you should have in hand some small snacks, take him to an obscure suitable location and keep the instruction sessions to 10 – 15 minutes or the West Siberian Laika will start to get bored. Keep in mind when he gets something right offer him lots of praise and a reward treat, though be cautious not to get him too excited or he might lose concentration.
Teach your West Siberian Laika to give you his paw
To train your West Siberian Laika to offer you his paw, first get him to sit, then as you state the word ‘paw’ take his paw in your hand and offer him a snack. And then repeat this, and after a couple of times do not take his paw so quickly. Say the word ‘paw’, count to one and then take it. You ought to see that he is raising his paw upward as you say the word. If he does not then go back to saying it at the same time. Do it a few more times then slow your reaction again. After two or three sessions most West Siberian Laikas pick this trick up quite quickly.
Teach your West Siberian Laika to offer you a high five
Like a lot of tricks the high 5 is a progression of a simpler trick, and in this case the paw trick. Place a treat in between your two fingers and raise your hand a bit higher than you’d raise it for the paw trick. Your West Siberian Laika will expect you wish to do the paw trick and will grab the treat with his paw as we trained him earlier. As he rises you say “high 5” and give your West Siberian Laika the snack. Once your West Siberian Laika has mastered the paw trick this one will likely be extremely simple to understand and with only a couple of sessions he will be accomplishing it from your hand signal instead of from your voice.
Teach your West Siberian Laika to jump through a hoop
Before you begin this one I would simply like to ask you to be a little sensible and not hold the hoop higher than necessary as you don’t want your West Siberian Laika to harm himself while doing the trick. Place your West Siberian Laika to 1 side of a hula hoop, get him to pay attention to your hand on the opposite side of the hoop. Place a treat in your hand and give the West Siberian Laika the command to stop sitting. In the beginning he may attempt to go around or underneath the hoop. In the event that this occurs begin once again. Your West Siberian Laika wants the treat and will quickly discover that going around or below does not work so he’ll soon begin going through it. The moment he does, state “hoop” and give him the treat. He’ll soon be leaping through the hoop upon the command of “hoop”. When I first began teaching this trick I owned a medium sized dog, so I started with the hoop six inches from the floor and slowly lifted it to waist height. In the case that you have a smaller sized dog you might wish to begin with the hoop on the ground so he simply goes through the hoop and then slowly lift it more as he gets accustomed to the trick.
I trust you have enjoyed learning these 3 tricks you can teach your West Siberian Laika. Have patience with your West Siberian Laika and most of all, have fun!
