To teach your Rough Collie tricks, even simple ones, you need to have some delicious treats, go to a quiet suitable location and manage to keep the coaching sessions to under 15 minutes or the Rough Collie will start to get bored. Remember when he gets something right give him lots of praise and a reward snack, but beware not to get him overly fired up or he might lose focus.
Teach your Rough Collie to offer you his paw
To get your Rough Collie to offer you his paw, initially get him to sit, then as you state the word ‘paw’ take his paw in your hand and offer him a snack. And then do this again, and after a couple of practices do not take his paw so quickly. State the word ‘paw’, count to 1 and then take it. You must see that he is raising his paw upward as you state the word. If he does not then return to stating it at the same time. Do it a couple of more times then slow your reaction once again. After a couple of sessions most Rough Collies pick this trick up quite quickly.
Teach your Rough Collie to give you a high five
Like a lot of tricks the high 5 is a continuation of an earlier trick, and in this case it’s the paw trick. Hold a treat in your two fingers and raise your hand a little higher than you would raise it for the paw trick. Your Rough Collie will presume you wish to do the paw trick and will grab the snack with his paw as we had instructed him earlier. While he reaches up you state “high five” and offer him the snack. As soon as your Rough Collie has mastered the paw trick this one will most likely be very easy to understand and with just a couple of sessions he will be doing it on hand signal rather than voice control.
Teach your Rough Collie to leap through a hoop
Before you start this 1 I would just like to ask you to be a little sensible and not suspend the hoop too high up as you do not want your Rough Collie to harm himself while doing the trick. Set your Rough Collie to one side of a hula hoop, get him to pay attention to your hand on the other side of the hoop. Place a snack in your hand and give the Rough Collie the direction to stop sitting. Initially he may try to walk around or beneath the hoop. In the event that this occurs start again. Your Rough Collie wants the snack and will quickly learn that walking around or below doesn’t work so he’ll quickly start going through it. Once he does, say “hoop” and give him the treat. He’ll soon be leaping through the hoop upon the command of “hoop”. When I started doing this trick I had a medium sized dog, so I started with the hoop 6 inches from the floor and slowly lifted it to waist height. In the case that you have a smaller dog you may wish to start with the hoop touching the ground so he just goes through the hoop and after that slowly lift it more once he gets accustomed to the trick.
I really hope you have enjoyed these 3 tricks you can teach your Rough Collie. Have patience with your Rough Collie and most of all, have a good time!
