To teach your Portuguese Podengo tricks, even easy ones, you need to always have some delicious treats, teach him in a quiet suitable place and manage to keep the instruction sessions to 10 – 15 minutes or your Portuguese Podengo will begin to get bored. Take note that when he gets something right offer him great deals of praise and a reward snack, just beware not to get him extra fired up or he might possibly lose focus.
Teach your Portuguese Podengo to offer you his paw
To teach your Portuguese Podengo to give you his paw, initially get him to sit, then as you state the word ‘paw’ take his paw in your hand and give him a treat. And then do this again, and after a couple of successful tries do not take his paw so fast. Say the word ‘paw’, count to one and only then take it. You should discover that he is raising his paw upward as you state the word. If he does not then go back to saying it at the very same time. Do it a couple of more times then slow your reaction again. After a few sessions most Portuguese Podengos pick this trick up rather quickly.
Teach your Portuguese Podengo to offer you a high 5
Like a lot of tricks the high 5 is a continuation of an earlier trick, in this case the paw trick. Hold a treat in between your two fingers and lift your hand a little bit higher than you would raise it for the paw trick. Your Portuguese Podengo will presume you wish to perform the paw trick and will grab the snack with his paw as we had instructed him in the prior trick. While he reaches up you say “high 5” and offer him the snack. As soon as your Portuguese Podengo has mastered the paw trick this one will likely be extremely simple to learn and with only a couple of sessions he will be doing it from your hand signal instead of vocal commands.
Teach your Portuguese Podengo to leap through a hoop
Before you start this 1 I would just like to ask you to be a little reasonable and not suspend the hoop higher than necessary as you do not really want your Portuguese Podengo to injure himself while practicing the trick. Set your Portuguese Podengo on one side of a hula hoop, get him to take note of your hand on the other side of the hoop. Hold a treat in your hand and give the Portuguese Podengo the command to stop sitting. At first he might attempt to go around or under the hoop. When this occurs begin again. Your Portuguese Podengo desires the snack and will quickly learn that going around or beneath doesn’t get it done so he’ll quickly start going through it. If he does, say “hoop” and offer him the snack. He’ll soon be jumping through the hoop upon the command of “hoop”. When I first started teaching this trick I had a medium sized dog, so I began with the hoop 6 inches from the floor and slowly lifted it to waist height. In the case that you possess a smaller sized dog you may want to start with the hoop on the ground so he simply goes through the hoop and then gradually lift it more as he gets accustomed to the trick.
I hope you have enjoyed these 3 tricks you can teach your Portuguese Podengo. Have patience with your Portuguese Podengo and most of all, have fun!
