To teach your Jagdterrier tricks, even the easy ones, you need to provide some small snacks, go to a quiet suitable location and maintain the teaching sessions to under 15 minutes or your Jagdterrier will begin to get bored. Don’t forget that when he gets something right offer him great deals of appreciation and a reward snack, yet beware not to get him excessively fired up or he will lose focus.
Teach your Jagdterrier to offer you his paw
To train your Jagdterrier to give you his paw, initially get him to sit, then as you say the word ‘paw’ take his paw in your hand and offer him a snack. After that repeat this, and after a couple of times don’t take his paw so fast. Say the word ‘paw’, count to one and then take it. You ought to see that he is raising his paw upward as you say the word. If he does not then go back to saying it at the same time. Do it a couple more times then slow your reaction again. After a few sessions most Jagdterriers pick this trick up rather quickly.
Teach your Jagdterrier to give you a high 5
Like a great deal of tricks the high five is a progression of an earlier trick, and in this case the paw trick. Place a snack in between your two fingers and lift your hand just a bit higher than you’d do for the paw trick. Your Jagdterrier will presume you wish to do the paw trick and will grab for the treat with his paw as we had trained him in the prior trick. Once he reaches up you state “high 5” and offer him the treat. As soon as your Jagdterrier has mastered the paw trick this one should be very simple to learn and with only a few sessions he will be accomplishing it from your hand signal rather than from your voice.
Teach your Jagdterrier to jump through a hoop
Before you begin this 1 I would simply like to ask you to be a little reasonable and not suspend the hoop too high as you don’t really want your Jagdterrier to harm himself while practicing the trick. Set your Jagdterrier on one side of a hula hoop, get him to take note of your hand on the other side of the hoop. Hold a treat in your hand and give the Jagdterrier the command to stop sitting. Initially he may try to walk around or beneath the hoop. In the event that this takes place start once again. Your Jagdterrier desires the snack and will quickly find out that walking around or under doesn’t work so he will soon start going through it. The moment he does, state “hoop” and offer him the snack. He will quickly be jumping through the hoop on the command of “hoop”. When I first began teaching this trick I had a medium sized dog, so I began with the hoop 6 inches from the floor and slowly raised it to waist high. In the event that you own a smaller sized dog you may desire to begin with the hoop on the ground so he simply goes through the hoop and after that gradually lift it once he gets accustomed to the trick.
I really hope you have enjoyed these 3 tricks you can teach your Jagdterrier. Have patience with your Jagdterrier and most of all, have a good time!
