To teach your Havanese tricks, even the easy ones, you should carry some small snacks, be in a quiet suitable place and manage to keep the coaching sessions to under 15 minutes or your Havanese will begin to get tired. Keep in mind when he gets something correct give him great deals of praise and a reward treat, but beware not to get him excessively excited or he might lose concentration.
Teach your Havanese to offer you his paw
To train your Havanese to give you his paw, first get him to sit, then as you say the word ‘paw’ take his paw in your hand and offer him a treat. Now do it again, and after a couple of practices don’t take his paw so fast. Say the word ‘paw’, count to 1 and then after that take it. You need to notice that he is bringing his paw upward as you say the word. If he doesn’t then go back to saying it at the same time. Do it a couple more times then slow your response once again. After a couple of sessions most Havaneses pick this trick up quite easily.
Teach your Havanese to give you a high 5
Like a lot of tricks the high five is a progression of an earlier trick, in this case the paw trick. Place a treat in your two fingers and raise your hand a bit higher than you would raise it for the paw trick. Your Havanese will expect you wish to perform the paw trick and will grab for the snack with his paw as we instructed him in the previous trick. Once he rises you say “high 5” and give him the treat. When your Havanese has actually mastered the paw trick this 1 will likely be very simple to understand and with only a few sessions he will be performing it from your hand signal rather than your voice.
Teach your Havanese to jump through a hoop
Before you start this one I would simply like to ask you to be a little practical and not hold the hoop too high up as you do not really want your Havanese to hurt himself while performing the trick. Place your Havanese on 1 side of a hula hoop, get him to take notice of your hand on the other side of the hoop. Place a snack in your hand and give the Havanese the command to stop sitting. Initially he might try to walk around or beneath the hoop. In the event that this takes place start once again. Your Havanese desires the treat and will quickly find out that walking around or below doesn’t get it done so he’ll soon begin going through it. Once he does, say “hoop” and give him the snack. He’ll quickly be jumping through the hoop on the command of “hoop”. When I started teaching this trick I owned a medium sized dog, so I started with the hoop 6 inches from the ground and slowly brought it to waist high. In the event that you possess a smaller dog you may want to start with the hoop on the ground so he simply goes through the hoop and then gradually raise it more once he gets accustomed to the trick.
I expect you have enjoyed learning these 3 tricks you can teach your Havanese. Have patience with your Havanese and most of all, have a good time!
