To teach your German Longhaired Pointer tricks, even the easy ones, you need to get hold of some of his favorite snacks, take him to an obscure suitable location and maintain the teaching sessions to under 15 minutes or the German Longhaired Pointer will begin to get bored. Remember when he gets something correct give him lots of praise and a reward treat, just take care not to get him over thrilled or he will lose concentration.
Teach your German Longhaired Pointer to give you his paw
To teach your German Longhaired Pointer to offer you his paw, initially get him to sit, then as you say the word ‘paw’ take his paw in your hand and give him a treat. Now repeat this, and after a couple of tries do not take his paw so fast. Say the word ‘paw’, count to one and then after that take it. You need to see that he is raising his paw upward as you say the word. If he does not then return to stating it at the exact same time. Do it a few more times then slow your reaction once again. After just a few sessions most German Longhaired Pointers pick this trick up quite easily.
Teach your German Longhaired Pointer to offer you a high 5
Like a lot of tricks the high five is a progression of an easier trick, and in this case it’s the paw trick. Hold a snack in between your two fingers and raise your hand a bit higher than you would raise it for the paw trick. Your German Longhaired Pointer will think you desire to do the paw trick and will grab the snack with his paw as we had instructed him previously. Once he reaches up you say “high 5” and give your German Longhaired Pointer the treat. When your German Longhaired Pointer has actually mastered the paw trick this one should be very simple to understand and with only a few sessions he will be performing it from your hand signal rather than voice control.
Teach your German Longhaired Pointer to jump through a hoop
Before you begin this 1 I would just like to ask you to be a little practical and not hold the hoop too high as you do not want your German Longhaired Pointer to harm himself while carrying out the trick. Set your German Longhaired Pointer on 1 side of a hula hoop, get him to take note of your hand on the other side of the hoop. Place a snack in your hand and offer the German Longhaired Pointer the direction to stop sitting. At first he may attempt to walk around or below the hula hoop. If this takes place start again. Your German Longhaired Pointer wants the treat and will quickly learn that walking around or below does not get it done so he’ll quickly begin going through it. Once he does, say “hoop” and offer him the treat. He will soon be leaping through the hoop on the command of “hoop”. When I first started doing this trick I owned a medium sized dog, so I started with the hoop six inches from the ground and slowly brought it to waist high. In the case that you have a smaller sized dog you might want to start with the hoop touching the ground so he just goes through the hoop and then gradually elevate it more once he gets used to the trick.
I expect you have enjoyed learning these 3 tricks you can teach your German Longhaired Pointer. Have patience with your German Longhaired Pointer and most importantly, have fun!
