To teach your Field Spaniel tricks, even easy ones, you need to carry some small snacks, be in a remote suitable location and maintain the learning sessions to under 15 minutes or the Field Spaniel will start to get bored. Always remember when he gets something right give him lots of praise and a reward treat, just beware not to get him extra thrilled or he may perhaps lose concentration.
Teach your Field Spaniel to give you his paw
To get your Field Spaniel to give you his paw, initially get him to sit, then as you state the word ‘paw’ take his paw in your hand and offer him a treat. And then repeat this, and after a few times don’t take his paw so quickly. Say the word ‘paw’, count to one and after that take it. You need to observe that he is bringing his paw upward as you say the word. If he doesn’t then go back to stating it at the exact same time. Do it a few more times then slow your reaction once again. After 2 or 3 sessions most Field Spaniels pick this trick up rather easily.
Teach your Field Spaniel to offer you a high five
Like a great deal of tricks the high five is a progression of an earlier trick, in this case the paw trick. Place a snack in between your two fingers and raise your hand just a little higher than you’d do for the paw trick. Your Field Spaniel will think you wish to perform the paw trick and will grab for the snack with his paw as we had trained him previously. As he rises you state “high 5” and give him the treat. As soon as your Field Spaniel has actually mastered the paw trick this one will probably be really easy to master and with only a couple of sessions he will be performing it on hand signal instead of voice control.
Teach your Field Spaniel to jump through a hoop
Before you begin this 1 I would just like to ask you to be a little reasonable and not hold the hoop too high up as you do not want your Field Spaniel to injure himself while carrying out the trick. Set your Field Spaniel on one side of a hula hoop, get him to focus on your hand on the other side of the hoop. Hold a treat in your hand and offer the Field Spaniel the command to stop sitting. In the beginning he might attempt to go around or beneath the hoop. In the event that this happens start again. Your Field Spaniel desires the treat and will soon discover that going around or below doesn’t work so he will quickly start going through it. Whenever he does, say “hoop” and offer him the snack. He will soon be jumping through the hoop upon the command of “hoop”. When I started teaching this trick I had a medium sized dog, so I started with the hoop 6 inches from the ground and gradually brought it to waist height. In the case that you own a smaller sized dog you may wish to begin with the hoop touching the floor so he simply goes through the hoop and after that gradually elevate it as he gets used to the trick.
I hope you have enjoyed learning these 3 tricks you can teach your Field Spaniel. Have patience with your Field Spaniel and most of all, have a good time!
