To teach your English Mastiff tricks, even easy ones, you should get hold of some savory snacks, teach him in a quiet suitable place and try to keep the coaching sessions to 10 – 15 minutes or the English Mastiff will start to get bored. Remember when he gets something right offer him great deals of praise and a reward treat, but beware not to get him overly thrilled or he will lose concentration.
Teach your English Mastiff to offer you his paw
To train your English Mastiff to offer you his paw, first get him to sit, then as you state the word ‘paw’ take his paw in your hand and give him a snack. And then do it again, and after a couple of successful tries do not take his paw so quickly. State the word ‘paw’, count to one and then after that take it. You need to notice that he is raising his paw upward as you say the word. If he doesn’t then return to stating it at the very same time. Do it a couple of more times then slow your reaction once again. After just a couple of sessions most English Mastiffs pick this trick up quite easily.
Teach your English Mastiff to give you a high five
Like a lot of tricks the high 5 is a continuation of an easier trick, and in this case it’s the paw trick. Hold a snack in your fingers and raise your hand just a little higher than you’d raise it for the paw trick. Your English Mastiff will think you wish to do the paw trick and will grab the snack with his paw as we had trained him previously. Once he rises you state “high 5” and give him the snack. When your English Mastiff has actually mastered the paw trick this one will likely be really simple to master and with only a few sessions he will be performing it from your hand signal instead of from your voice.
Teach your English Mastiff to jump through a hoop
Before you begin this 1 I would just like to ask you to be a little practical and not suspend the hoop higher than necessary as you do not really want your English Mastiff to injure himself while carrying out the trick. Place your English Mastiff to 1 side of a hula hoop, get him to focus on your hand on the other side of the hoop. Hold a snack in your hand and offer the English Mastiff the command to stop sitting. In the beginning he might try to go around or below the hula hoop. When this occurs begin once again. Your English Mastiff wants the snack and will quickly learn that going around or below doesn’t work so he’ll soon start going through it. The minute he does, state “hoop” and offer him the treat. He’ll quickly be jumping through the hoop on the command of “hoop”. When I started teaching this trick I owned a medium sized dog, so I began with the hoop six inches from the floor and gradually lifted it to waist height. If you have a smaller dog you may wish to begin with the hoop on the floor so he just goes through the hoop and then slowly raise it more once he gets accustomed to the trick.
