To teach your Chesapeake Bay Retriever tricks, even the simple ones, you should carry some of his favorite treats, teach him in a quiet suitable place and hold the coaching sessions to under fifteen minutes or the Chesapeake Bay Retriever will start to get tired. Always remember when he gets something right offer him lots of appreciation and a reward snack, however take care not to get him too ecstatic or he will lose focus.
Teach your Chesapeake Bay Retriever to offer you his paw
To get your Chesapeake Bay Retriever to give you his paw, first get him to sit, then as you say the word ‘paw’ take his paw in your hand and give him a snack. Then repeat this, and after a couple of practices don’t take his paw so fast. State the word ‘paw’, count to one and only then take it. You must observe that he is bringing his paw up as you state the word. If he doesn’t then go back to saying it at the same time. Do it a couple of more times then slow your reaction once again. After just a few sessions most Chesapeake Bay Retrievers pick this trick up rather quickly.
Teach your Chesapeake Bay Retriever to offer you a high five
Like a lot of tricks the high five is a progression of an easier trick, and in this case it’s the paw trick. Hold a treat in between your fingers and raise your hand a little higher than you’d do for the paw trick. Your Chesapeake Bay Retriever will expect you want to perform the paw trick and will reach for the snack with his paw as we trained him in the previous trick. Once he rises you say “high five” and offer him the snack. As soon as your Chesapeake Bay Retriever has actually mastered the paw trick this one should be extremely simple to learn and with only a couple of sessions he will be performing it on hand signal instead of from your voice.
Teach your Chesapeake Bay Retriever to leap through a hoop
Before you begin this one I would simply like to ask you to be a little practical and not suspend the hoop too high as you don’t want your Chesapeake Bay Retriever to harm himself while doing the trick. Place your Chesapeake Bay Retriever to 1 side of a hula hoop, get him to take notice of your hand on the opposite side of the hoop. Hold a treat in your hand and offer the Chesapeake Bay Retriever the direction to stop sitting. In the beginning he may attempt to go around or under the hoop. When this occurs start again. Your Chesapeake Bay Retriever wants the snack and will quickly find out that going around or underneath does not work so he will soon begin going through it. The minute he does, state “hoop” and offer him the snack. He’ll quickly be leaping through the hoop on the command of “hoop”. When I initially began teaching this trick I owned a medium sized dog, so I began with the hoop 6 inches from the floor and slowly raised it to waist height. In the case that you possess a smaller dog you might wish to start with the hoop on the floor so he simply goes through the hoop and after that gradually raise it as he gets accustomed to the trick.
I hope you have enjoyed learning these 3 tricks you can teach your Chesapeake Bay Retriever. Have patience with your Chesapeake Bay Retriever and most importantly, have fun!
