To teach your Artois Hound tricks, even the easy ones, you need to provide some small treats, take him to a remote suitable location and keep the teaching sessions to 10 – 15 minutes or your Artois Hound will start to get bored. Remember when he gets something correct give him lots of appreciation and a reward treat, just be mindful not to get him extra ecstatic or he might lose focus.
Teach your Artois Hound to offer you his paw
To train your Artois Hound to give you his paw, initially get him to sit, then as you state the word ‘paw’ take his paw in your hand and offer him a treat. Next do this again, and after a few tries do not take his paw so quickly. State the word ‘paw’, count to 1 and only then take it. You need to observe that he is bringing his paw up as you say the word. If he doesn’t then return to stating it at the same time. Do it a couple of more times then slow your response again. After 2 or 3 sessions most Artois Hounds pick this trick up quite easily.
Teach your Artois Hound to give you a high five
Like a great deal of tricks the high five is a continuation of an easier trick, in this case the paw trick. Hold a treat in between your two fingers and raise your hand just a little higher than you would raise it for the paw trick. Your Artois Hound will expect you desire to perform the paw trick and will grab the snack with his paw as we trained him earlier. As he reaches up you state “high 5” and give your Artois Hound the snack. Once your Artois Hound has mastered the paw trick this 1 will likely be really easy to learn and with just a few sessions he will be doing it on hand signal rather than from your voice.
Teach your Artois Hound to jump through a hoop
Before you start this 1 I would simply like to ask you to be a little sensible and not hold the hoop too high as you do not want your Artois Hound to injure himself while carrying out the trick. Place your Artois Hound to one side of a hula hoop, get him to take notice of your hand on the other side of the hoop. Hold a treat in your hand and offer the Artois Hound the direction to stop sitting. Initially he might attempt to go around or under the hula hoop. When this occurs start again. Your Artois Hound desires the snack and will quickly find out that walking around or underneath doesn’t work so he’ll soon start going through it. When he does, state “hoop” and offer him the snack. He will soon be leaping through the hoop on the command of “hoop”. When I started teaching this trick I owned a medium sized dog, so I began with the hoop 6 inches from the ground and slowly raised it to waist high. If you have a smaller dog you might desire to begin with the hoop touching the ground so he simply goes through the hoop and after that slowly lift it more once he gets accustomed to the trick.
