To teach your American Water Spaniel tricks, even easy ones, you should provide some small treats, teach him in a quiet suitable location and try to keep the instruction sessions to 10 – 15 minutes or the American Water Spaniel will start to get bored. Keep in mind when he gets something right give him great deals of praise and a reward snack, just beware not to get him overly thrilled or he will lose concentration.
Teach your American Water Spaniel to offer you his paw
To teach your American Water Spaniel to offer you his paw, initially get him to sit, then as you state the word ‘paw’ take his paw in your hand and offer him a treat. And then repeat this, and after a couple of tries do not take his paw so fast. Say the word ‘paw’, count to one and after that take it. You should observe that he is bringing his paw up as you say the word. If he does not then return to saying it at the very same time. Do it a couple of more times then slow your response once again. After a couple of sessions most American Water Spaniels pick this trick up rather quickly.
Teach your American Water Spaniel to offer you a high five
Like a lot of tricks the high 5 is a continuation of a simpler trick, in this case it’s the paw trick. Place a treat in between your two fingers and raise your hand a bit higher than you’d raise it for the paw trick. Before you start this one I would just like to ask you to be a little reasonable and not suspend the hoop higher than necessary as you don’t really want your American Water Spaniel to harm himself while carrying out the trick. Place your American Water Spaniel on 1 side of a hula hoop, get him to pay attention to your hand on the opposite side of the hoop. Place a treat in your hand and offer the American Water Spaniel the direction to stop sitting. In the beginning he may try to go around or under the hula hoop. When this occurs start once again. Your American Water Spaniel desires the snack and will soon discover that walking around or beneath doesn’t get it so he’ll quickly start going through it. As soon as he does, say “hoop” and give him the treat. He will quickly be leaping through the hoop upon the command of “hoop”. When I started doing this trick I had a medium sized dog, so I started with the hoop six inches from the ground and gradually brought it to waist height. On the occasion that you have a smaller sized dog you may wish to start with the hoop on the ground so he just goes through the hoop and after that slowly elevate it more as he gets used to the trick.
