To teach your American Foxhound tricks, even the simple ones, you should carry some small snacks, teach him in a quiet suitable location and hold the teaching sessions to under 15 minutes or your American Foxhound will begin to get tired. Bear in mind when he gets something right give him great deals of praise and a reward treat, just be mindful not to get him too thrilled or he might lose concentration.
Teach your American Foxhound to offer you his paw
To train your American Foxhound to give you his paw, initially get him to sit, then as you say the word ‘paw’ take his paw in your hand and offer him a snack. Now do this again, and after a few times do not take his paw so fast. Say the word ‘paw’, count to 1 and then after that take it. You need to see that he is bringing his paw up as you say the word. If he does not then go back to stating it at the very same time. Do it a couple of more times then slow your reaction once again. After just a few sessions most American Foxhounds pick this trick up quite quickly.
Teach your American Foxhound to offer you a high 5
Like a great deal of tricks the high five is a progression of a simpler trick, and in this case the paw trick. Place a treat in your fingers and lift your hand slightly higher than you’d raise it for the paw trick. Your American Foxhound will assume you desire to perform the paw trick and will reach for the snack with his paw as we taught him in the previous trick. Once he rises you state “high 5” and give him the snack. Once your American Foxhound has actually mastered the paw trick this one will likely be very easy to understand and with only a few sessions he will be performing it on hand signal instead of your voice.
Teach your American Foxhound to jump through a hoop
Before you begin this one I would just like to ask you to be a little practical and not hold the hoop too high as you do not really want your American Foxhound to hurt himself while carrying out the trick. Set your American Foxhound on 1 side of a hula hoop, get him to take notice of your hand on the opposite side of the hoop. Place a treat in your hand and offer the American Foxhound the direction to stop sitting. At first he may attempt to walk around or under the hula hoop. In the event that this happens begin again. Your American Foxhound desires the snack and will soon discover that going around or under doesn’t get it done so he will soon begin going through it. The instant he does, say “hoop” and offer him the snack. He will quickly be leaping through the hoop upon the command of “hoop”. When I initially began teaching this trick I owned a medium sized dog, so I started with the hoop 6 inches from the floor and slowly increased it to waist high. If you own a smaller sized dog you might want to begin with the hoop touching the ground so he simply goes through the hoop and after that slowly elevate it more as he gets accustomed to the trick.
I trust you have enjoyed learning these 3 tricks you can teach your American Foxhound. Have patience with your American Foxhound and most of all, have fun!
