All of us long for training the perfect Portuguese Pointer, a pet that’s a CGC or canine good citizen and is very well behaved and trustworthy at all times. Well dreams do come true when the instruction is performed with kindness and focus. Don’t forget pups learn from the first day and want to be instructed what is right, what is wrong, and appropriate interpersonal skills.
Pups are like children, they need continuous direction and training. Training a pup need not be a nightmare, all you need to keep in mind are a few straightforward guidelines:
10 Tips For Training Your Portuguese Pointer
- Until your pup is trained, you need to keep an eye on him at all times. When you can not then you need to cage her. Put together a routine for the pup, that will enable him to settle easily. The schedule should consist of things such as hourly bathroom visits, eating times, break times, walks, play time, teaching, et cetera. A pup that has a very busy day has no time to become unoccupied and get into mischief.
- Train the pup to heed you. Portuguese Pointers stay in packs and naturally follow a leader. If you establish your dominance in no uncertain terms then teaching will eventually become easy because the pup will follow you at all times and not defy your power.
- Utilize exclusively constructive training tactics. Don’t shout at, strike, or abuse your Portuguese Pointer. It is not just harsh but might create behavioral problems. Use of electric shocks, prong collars, sprays, et cetera could hurt the animal.
- Teach the pup “absolutely nothing in life is without cost.” This is a method of teaching that is commonly recognized as a reliable training tool. As you apply this, your pup will be taught that to experience anything like affection, a stroll, or snack, he has to behave properly.
- Present the significance of “No,” from day one. Do not advocate actions such as leaping, growling, tug-o-war, snarling, or running out of open gates and doors. Praise courtesy and dismiss or walk away when there is bad behavior. The pup will certainly learn that if he is mischievous he will lose his companion/playmate.
- To deal with a behavior you should catch the Portuguese Pointer in the act and startle him by shaking a bottle of pebbles. Once you have done this help him correct his behavior and instantly give him a treat and approval. Portuguese Pointers do not call to mind what took place prior so reprimanding him after an occurrence is useless.
- Make sure to call/use his name positively. Never say “Bad TOM,” or “No Tom,” this will result in mental confusion and the Portuguese Pointer will believe that if you call his name then it is for something negative. The doggy must relate his name with happy things like hugs, petting, strolls, food, and such. If this occurs he will approach willingly once you call out his name.
- Make a coaching regimen that is short and sweet, say 10 minutes 3 times a day. Lengthy repetitive lessons can be boring and the Portuguese Pointer will lose interest in the learning session. Make learning exciting and use trick training sessions to demonstrate orders like sit, down, come etc.
- Bond with the Portuguese Pointer and both of you will appreciate your lessons. The pup needs to hope for hanging out with you and not stay clear of you by running away or taking cover. Be sure to socialize the dog quickly. Socialization is among the most critical teachings. The Portuguese Pointer needs to master how to be around other animals, people, sounds, vehicles, and other activities. And so, slowly and gradually introduce the puppy when he is small to common events and noises. Take him to the shopping mall/ dog park, introduce him to kids and other animals, and make him unafraid of the vacuum and water hose.
- Get to know everything about cage training, leash walking, house breaking, and also food training. These are remedial lessons that every Portuguese Pointer puppy should learn. Learn about all the idiosyncrasies in addition to distinctive features of the breed. This will give you important information on how to properly instruct the puppy.
