All of us dream of training the perfect Indian Spitz, a pup that is a CGC or canine good citizen and is very well mannered and responsible at all times. Well dreams really do come true when the teaching is done with care and focus. Realize pups learn from the first day and really need to be shown what is right, what isn’t, and proper interpersonal skills.
Pups act like young children, they demand constant guidance and training. Training a pup needn’t be an ordeal, all you have to think about are a few simple rules:
Top Ten Tips For Training Your Indian Spitz
- Until your pup learns, you must keep an eye on her at all times. Whenever you aren’t able to then you need to crate him. Develop a calendar for the pup, this will help him to settle down very quickly. The routine has to include things such as regular potty breaks, feeding times, rest periods, walks, play time, exercise, et cetera. A pup that has a very busy day has no time to become bored or get into mischief.
- Teach the pup to value you. Indian Spitzs live in packs and naturally need a leader. If you establish your dominance in no uncertain terms then training will become easy because the pup will heed you at all times and not defy your power.
- Use exclusively positive training tactics. Do not ever holler at, hit, or abuse your Indian Spitz. It’s not just unkind but might cause behavioral challenges. Using electric shocks, prong collars, sprays, etc could possibly wound the animal.
- Teach the pup “nothing in this life is free.” This is a philosophy that is generally accepted as a practical coaching tool. As you execute this, the pup will learn that to get something like love, a walk, or snack, he will need to act well.
- Present the significance of “No,” from day one. Do not encourage actions like leaping, growling, tug-o-war, yapping, or running out of open gates and doors. Compliment courtesy and just ignore or walk away when there is bad behavior. The pup will discover that if he misbehaves he will lose his companion/playmate.
- To improve a habit you should catch the Indian Spitz in the process and surprise him by shaking a jar of stones. When you have done this make him improve his behavior and immediately give him a treat and approval. Indian Spitzs do not remember what happened previously so chastening him after an event is useless.
- Make sure to call/use his name positively. Don’t say “Bad TOM,” or “No Tom,” this will trigger mental confusion and the Indian Spitz will presume that if you call his name then it is something bad. The dog should correlate his name with happy events like hugs, petting, walks, food, and such. If this transpires he will approach willingly anytime you call out his name.
- Create a coaching schedule that is short and sweet, about ten minutes three times a day. Extensive repeated lessons can be uninspiring and the Indian Spitz is going to lose interest in learning. Make training cool and use trick training sessions to demonstrate commands like sit, down, come etc.
- Connect with the Indian Spitz and both of you will appreciate your lessons. The pup must look forward to spending quality time with you and not keep away from you by turning tail or taking cover. Make certain to socialize the young dog early. Socialization is among the most important teachings. The Indian Spitz will need to master how to coexist around other animals, people, sounds, vehicles, and other activities. So, carefully introduce the doggy when he is little to day-to-day activities and sounds.
