All of us hope for training the perfect Harrier, a puppy that’s a CGC or canine good citizen and is very well behaved and reliable at all times. Well dreams really do come true if the training is performed with care and focus. Remember pups learn from day one and need to be advised what is correct, what is not, and effective socialization.
Pups are just like children, they want constant guidance and teaching. Training a pup need not be an ordeal, all you want to think about are a few simple rules:

- Up until your pup learns, you must keep an eye on him at all times. If you can’t then you have to crate him. Put together a routine for the pup, that will serve to help her to calm down very quickly. The schedule should consist of things like hourly bathroom visits, feeding times, rest periods, strolls, play time, training, et cetera. A pup that has a busy day has no time to get unoccupied and get into mischief.
- Teach the pup to heed you. Harriers live in packs and instinctively need a leader. If you establish your dominance in no uncertain terms then teaching will come easy as the pup will follow you at all times and not challenge your power.
- Utilize only encouraging training strategies. Do not shout at, strike, or punish your Harrier. It’s not only cruel but can easily bring about behavioral problems. Using electric shocks, prong collars, sprays, etc may possibly injure the animal.
- Teach the pup “absolutely nothing in life is free.” This is a system that is commonly recognized as a helpful teaching tool. As you emphasize this, the pup will be taught that to get anything like love, a walk, or reward, he needs to behave well.
- Show the significance of “No,” from day one. Do not advocate actions such as jumping, growling, tug-o-war, barking, or escaping open gates and doorways. - Always call/use his name positively. Never say “Bad TOM,” or “No Tom,” this will result in mental confusion and the Harrier will presume that if you call his name then it is for something bad. The pup must affiliate his name with pleasant things like hugs, petting, walks, snacks, and such. If this happens he will respond happily if you call out his name.
- Establish a teaching routine that is short and sweet, say ten minutes 3 times a day. Long recurring trainings can be boring and the Harrier is going to lose interest in the learning session. Make lessons interesting and use trick training sessions to demonstrate orders like sit, down, come etc.
- Connect with the Harrier and both of you will definitely enjoy your sessions. The pup ought to hope for hanging out with you and not stay away from you by turning tail or taking cover. Be sure to socialize the puppy very early. Socialization is one of the most critical lessons. The Harrier must learn to be with other animals, people, sounds, vehicles, and other activities.
