Teaching Your Weimaraner To Sit

Teach Your Weimaraner to Sit

Are you working to teach your Weimaraner to sit? The talent of sitting up is quite easily taught to pocket-sized dogs, though much larger pooches are another story. It is problematic for them to keep their equilibrium.

Teach Your Weimaraner to Sit: Groundwork

Sitting up is one of the 1st techniques that you should teach to a Weimaraner and forms the groundwork for many other tricks. In order to train a Weimaraner to sit up, prepare some snacks as a reward, and set your Weimaraner on her rump in a corner, so she is not able to fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no space to lose balance.

Teach Your Weimaraner to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Command

Protect her from pitching to the front by holding one hand under her chin and with your second hand hold her snack above your Weimaraner’s nose. Keep saying clearly and intelligibly, “sit up.” Don’t make her sit for too long at any one time, however repeat the training routinely and reward her frequently with a lot of cheers and treats.

Teach Your Weimaraner to Sit: Help Her Balance

Throughout her initial lesson your Weimaraner will need quite a bit of support from your hand to prevent her from falling forward, but as she gets more control of her muscles and realises what you want her to do, she will rely less upon your hand to hold her in position. Gradually, you can give her less support up until you’ll merely have to keep one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her chin or neck, to be waiting to stop her falling forward; later you can easily remove this hand and just simply dangle the snack just over the height of your Weimaraner’s face.

Teach Your Weimaraner To Sit: Remove the Assistance Gradually Over Time

With constant practice your Weimaraner will sit up for a long time after you tell her to. Then she should be set up against the wall, so as to provide her a support for her back. Soon after she has gotten the hang of this and can hold her place easily, practice with her against chair legs, pillows or other items that offer her less and less aid. In time she will master how to preserve her stability and sit without having anything to rest on.

Teach Your Weimaraner to Sit: Putting It All Together

In the course of all these lessons the words "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her psyche through regular repetition. Last comes the final lesson to teach your Weimaraner to sit up whenever she hears the words. Chances are, if she has been properly instructed, you will merely have to call her out in the room, show to her a reward, hold it up a suitable distance from the ground, say "sit up" and she will obey. Then you'll just give her the reward while still in position.

The only condition for perfection is to rehearse with your Weimaraner several times daily until she can sit up when told and without being shown a treat; give her the rewards only once she has adhered to the order.

Teach Your Weimaraner Other Tricks

You have now the technique for teaching your Weimaraner many other tricks. She can now learn how to beg by waving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she will move in conjunction with yours. She can also be taught to salute by moving one paw up to the side of her head, or to hold a wooden pipe in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other articles of clothing.

While training a Weimaraner to accept being clothed, don't try to get her to wear too many things at one time. Try at first with a hat. After she gets used to that you could put on a coat and over time introduce her to the other clothing.

Enjoy "teaching your Weimaraner the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun along the way!
