Are you trying to teach your Smooth Collie to sit? The talent of sitting up is quickly taught to smaller dogs, yet larger pet dogs are another story. It is challenging for them to sustain their balance.
Teach Your Smooth Collie to Sit: Preparation
Sitting up is one of the 1st techniques that should be taught to your Smooth Collie and is the foundation for a large number of other techniques. In order to train a Smooth Collie to sit up, prep some snacks as a perk, and place your Smooth Collie on her backside in the corner, to ensure she won’t be able to fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no space to stumble.
Teach Your Smooth Collie to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Words
Prevent her from falling forward by sticking your hand under her chin and using your other hand hold the reward above her face. Keep repeating clearly and intelligibly, “sit.” Don’t force her to sit for too long at one time, but repeat the instruction regularly and reward her frequently with a lot of recognition and snacks.
Teach Your Smooth Collie to Sit: Help Her Stay Balanced
During her first lesson your Smooth Collie will need quite a bit of support from your hand to stop her from falling forward, but as she gets more control of the balancing muscles and is aware of what you want her to do, she will count less and less on your hand to hold her steady. Gradually, you can give your Smooth Collie less help and support until you will basically have to keep one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her neck or chin, to be waiting to stop her falling forward; eventually you can most likely remove the hand entirely and just hold the snack just above the height of your Smooth Collie’s face.
Teach Your Smooth Collie To Sit: Remove the Help Incrementally
With regular practice your Smooth Collie will sit up long after you get her to sit. Next she should be set against a wall, so as to provide her assistance for her back. When she has understood this and can keep her position easily, practice with her against chair legs, cushions or other things that offer her less and less support. Sooner or later she will learn how to preserve her stability and sit in the absence of anything to rest against.
Teach Your Smooth Collie to Sit: Putting It All Together
Throughout all this training the phrase "sit up" will have been impressed upon her mind with the assistance of constant repetition. Lastly comes the final lesson to teach your Smooth Collie to sit up right after she hears the words. Chances are, if she has been carefully taught, you will merely have to summon her out into the room, display to her a treat, hold it up a reasonable distance from the ground, say "sit up or sit" and she will do so. Then you give her the treat while still in position.
The only prerequisite for perfection is to practice with her several times a day until she will sit when commanded to and without being shown a snack; give her the treats only once she has followed the command.
Teach Your Smooth Collie Other Tricks
You have now the method for teaching your Smooth Collie many other tricks. She can now be taught how to beg by waving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she'll move in sync with yours. She also can be taught to salute by moving one paw to the side of her head, or to keep something in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothes.
While training a Smooth Collie to accept being dressed up, do not try to make her wear too many things simultaneously. Try her at first with just a hat. After she gets used to that you can put on a coat and gradually introduce her to the other clothing.
