Are you struggling to teach your Pumi to sit? The talent of sitting up is quite easily taught to little dogs, yet much larger pooches are a different story. It’s challenging for them to sustain their balance.
Teach Your Pumi to Sit: Prep
Sitting is one of the fundamental techniques that should be taught to a Pumi and forms the groundwork for numerous other skills. In order to train a Pumi to sit up, organize some treats as a reward, and set the Pumi on her haunches in the corner, to make sure that she can’t fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no room to stumble.
Teach Your Pumi to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Phrase
Protect her from pitching to the front by securing 1 hand on her chin and with your other hand dangle her treat above the Pumi’s nose. Keep repeating deliberately and distinctly, “sit up.” Do not make her sit too long at any one time, however repeat the training routinely and reward her often with a lot of approval and treats.
Teach Your Pumi to Sit: Help Her Maintain Balance
During her initial lesson your Pumi will require considerable help from your hand to keep her from tumbling forward, but as she gets control of her stabilizing muscles and grasps what you want, she will rely less and less upon your hand to keep her steady. Gradually, you can give your Pumi less assistance until you’ll merely have to maintain one hand in position two or three inches from her chin or neck, to be set to stop her falling forward; later on you may take away the hand entirely and just hold the treat right above the level of your Pumi’s face.
Teach Your Pumi To Sit: Remove the Assistance Slowly And Gradually
After constant practice your Pumi will stay seated long after you command her. The next step is she should be set against the wall, so as to offer her assistance for her back. Soon after she has mastered this and can keep her position effortlessly, rehearse with her using chair legs, cushions or other things that give her less and less help and support. In time she will get the hang of how to sustain her balance and sit without anything to lean against.
Teach Your Pumi to Sit: Putting It All Together
During the course of all these lessons the phrase "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her subconscious with the assistance of constant repetition. Lastly comes the final lesson to teach your Pumi to sit up whenever she hears the words. There's a great chance, if she has been carefully taught, you will merely have to call her out in the room, reveal to her a reward, hold it up a suitable distance from the floor, say "sit" and she'll obey. Then you'll just give her the snack while still in position.
The only condition for perfection is to train with your Pumi several times daily until she will sit up on command and without being shown a treat; give her the rewards only after she has followed the command.
Teach Your Pumi Other Tricks
You have now the groundwork for teaching your Pumi many other tricks. She now can be taught to beg by moving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she will move in rhythm with yours. She also can learn to salute by moving one paw to the side of her head, or to hold a toy in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothes.
While teaching a Pumi to submit to being dressed up, don't try to make her wear too many items at one time. Try at first with just a cap. Only after she gets adjusted to that you could put on a coat and slowly introduce her to the other garments.
