This article is about how to teach your Old Time Farm Shepherd to jump for agility. We are often asked, “How many jumps is best to begin with?” You can’t ever have enough single jumps to learn agility. A good starting point is 4 jumps. This is the absolute minimum number of jumps that we recommend.
How to Teach a Old Time Farm Shepherd jumping: Start with Four
You can teach your Old Time Farm Shepherd many exercises, skills, and drills with 4 jumps. 4 jumps will allow you to work on a short jump chute or jump grid. You can practice on a “box” with your jumps and practice collection, handling, and 270 degree jumps. You can teach your Old Time Farm Shepherd jumping right and left. You could be out of the box and send your Old Time Farm Shepherd or you can handle from within the box. Your jumps can be positioned in a horizontal row, so you could practice serpentines and threadles.
Teach Your Old Time Farm Shepherd 8 Jumps
Take the next logical step and practice eight jumps. Now you can setup 2 boxes with one starter jump. Now you’ve multiplied the number of drills that you can work on with your Old Time Farm Shepherd. Your jump grids can be of suggested size and quantity of jumps. You could also setup the jumps in a circle with the jump bars perpendicular to the circle or on the perimeter of the circle. This pattern also enables you to develop a variety of skills.
Teach the Old Time Farm Shepherd Double and Triple Jumps
The next step is a double jump and a triple jump. You can chain two or three solo jumps together to make your expanded jump, however having double and triple jumps in your course work is really beneficial to work on. We’ve seen several Old Time Farm Shepherds run a perfect course and the final obstacle is a triple and the Old Time Farm Shepherd is not prepared to do it, and bang, down goes the bar.
