Teach Your Lakeland Terrier to Sit: Planning
Sitting up is one of the fundamental tricks that should be taught to your Lakeland Terrier and lays the ground work for several other tricks. In order to train a Lakeland Terrier to sit up, prepare some treats as a reward, and put the Lakeland Terrier on her butt in a corner, so that she can not fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no room to stumble.
Teach Your Lakeland Terrier to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Words
Protect her from pitching towards you by keeping one hand under her chin and with your second hand hold the treat above her nose. Keep repeating deliberately and clearly, “sit.” Don’t make her sit up too long at any one time, however repeat the lesson routinely and reward her frequently with loads of adoration and treats.
Teach Your Lakeland Terrier to Sit: Help Her Keep Her Balance
Throughout the beginner lesson she will call for quite a bit of support from your hand to keep her from pitching forward, but as she gets better control of her balancing muscles and sees what you want, she’ll depend less and less upon your hand to keep her steady. Then you can gradually give her less help till you’ll basically have to leave one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her chin or neck, to be ready to stop her from falling forward; later you can probably withdraw your hand entirely and just hold the snack right over the height of your Lakeland Terrier’s face.
Teach Your Lakeland Terrier To Sit: Remove the Help Over Time
After consistent training she will stay seated well after you set her up. Then she should be set against the wall, so as to provide her a support for her back only. When she has understood this and can keep her position easily, rehearse with her using chair legs, pillows or other items that give her less and less help. Subsequently she will be trained to sustain her equilibrium and sit up without needing something to lean against.
Teach Your Lakeland Terrier to Sit: Putting It All Together
Throughout all these lessons the words "sit up" will have been impressed upon her psyche with the assistance of regular repetition. Now is the final lesson to teach your Lakeland Terrier to sit up as quickly as she hears the phrase. Chances are, if she has been properly trained, you will simply have to summon her out into the room, show a snack, hold it up a suitable distance from the ground, say "sit" and she'll do so. Then you'll just give her the snack while still in position.
The only condition for excellence is to practice with her multiple times a day until she can sit up when told and without being shown a reward; give her the treats only once she has complied with the order.
