Teach Your Havanese to Sit: Anticipation
Sitting is one of the initial skills that you should teach to a Havanese and lays the groundwork for various other skills. In order to train a Havanese to sit up, prepare some snacks as a perk, and place the Havanese on her haunches in the corner, to make sure that she won’t fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no space to lose balance.
Teach Your Havanese to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Command
Protect her from tilting to the front by keeping your hand on her chin and using the other hand hold her treat above her face. Keep saying deliberately and distinctly, “sit.” Don’t make her sit up too long at any one time, but do repeat the training often and reward her often with loads of cheers and treats.
Teach Your Havanese to Sit: Help Her Keep Her Balance
Throughout the 1st lesson your Havanese will need quite a bit of assistance from your hand to keep her from tumbling forward, but as she gets control of the stabilizing muscles and figures out what you want her to do, she will rely less on your hand to hold her steady. Gradually, you can give your Havanese less help till you will merely have to maintain one hand in position two or three inches from her chin or neck, to be ready to prevent her falling forward; later on you can easily take away the hand entirely and simply dangle the reward right over the height of her head.
Teach Your Havanese To Sit: Remove the Help Slowly And Gradually
With regular practice your Havanese will stay seated for a good while after you get her to sit. Afterward she should be set up against your wall, so as to provide her assistance for her back only. Immediately after she has taken in this and can hold her place easily, practice with her against chair legs, cushions or other things that give her less and less help and support. At some point she will grasp how to keep her stability and sit up in the absence of anything to rest on.
Teach Your Havanese to Sit: Putting It All Together
During the course of all these lessons the command "sit up" will have been instilled upon her subconscious with the assistance of persistent repetition. Now is the final training to teach your Havanese to sit up as quickly as she hears the command. There's a great chance, if she has been properly instructed, you will just have to summon her out in the room, display to her a reward, hold it up a suitable distance from the ground, say "sit up or sit" and she will do so. Then just give her the reward while still in place.
The only condition for excellence is to rehearse with her several times daily until she can sit on command and without being shown a snack; give her the rewards only once she has followed the command.
Teach Your Havanese Other Tricks
