Are you working to teach your Greenland Dog to sit? The skill of sitting up is effortlessly taught to petite dogs, but much larger doggies are a different story. It is tough for them to keep their balance.
Teach Your Greenland Dog to Sit: Preparing
Sitting is one of the most basic tricks that should be taught to a Greenland Dog and forms the foundation for myriad other skills. To train a Greenland Dog to sit up, put together some snacks as a perk, and set the Greenland Dog on her haunches in the corner, to ensure she is not able to fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no room to stumble.
Teach Your Greenland Dog to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Command
Protect her from pitching towards you by maintaining your hand underneath her chin and using your other hand dangle her reward above her face. Keep repeating clearly and deliberately, “sit up.” Don’t make her sit up for too long at any one time, however repeat the instruction frequently and reward her frequently with lots of recognition and treats.
Teach Your Greenland Dog to Sit: Help Her Maintain Balance
During the initial lesson your Greenland Dog will need a lot of help from your hand to prevent her from pitching forward, but as she gets more control of her stabilizing muscles and learns what you want, she will count less and less upon your hand to hold her steady. Gradually, you can give her less help until you will merely have to leave one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her neck or chin, to be set to stop her from falling forward; in the future you can withdraw the hand altogether and just suspend the treat right above the level of her face.
Teach Your Greenland Dog To Sit: Remove the Aids Slowly
With regular practice your Greenland Dog will sit up well after you set her up. Then she should be set up against a wall, so as to provide her help for her back only. Once she has gotten the hang of this and can maintain her place effortlessly, rehearse with her up against chair legs, pillows or other items that offer her less and less assistance. In the end she will be trained to preserve her balance and sit in the absence of something to rest on.
Teach Your Greenland Dog to Sit: Putting It All Together
Throughout all these lessons the command "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her psyche with the assistance of regular repetition. Now here's the final lesson to teach your Greenland Dog to sit up immediately after she hears the phrase. There's a great chance, if she has been diligently instructed, you will simply have to get her out into the room, reveal to her a treat, hold it up a suitable distance from the floor, say "sit" and she'll obey. Then you give her the treat while still in position.
The only prerequisite for excellence is to rehearse with her several times a day until she sits up when commanded to and without being shown a snack; give her the rewards only after she has followed the command.
Teach Your Greenland Dog Other Tricks
You have now the method for teaching your Greenland Dog many other skills. She now can learn how to beg by waving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she'll move in conjunction with yours. She can also be taught to salute by moving one paw to the side of her head, or to keep a wooden pipe in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothing.
When training a Greenland Dog to submit to being clothed, do not try to make her wear too many clothes at once. Try at first with just a hat. Soon after she gets used to that you can put on a jacket and eventually introduce her to the other clothes.
