Are you struggling to teach your Fila Brasileiro to sit? The talent of sitting up is regularly taught to little dogs, but much larger pooches are a different story. It is problematic for them to sustain their balance.
Teach Your Fila Brasileiro to Sit: Readiness
Sitting is one of the initial tricks that should be taught to your Fila Brasileiro and lays the ground work for quite a few other skills. To train a Fila Brasileiro to sit up, organize some treats as a reward, and put the Fila Brasileiro on her butt in a corner, to make sure that she can’t fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no space to lose balance.
Teach Your Fila Brasileiro to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Sound of The Words
Prevent her from tilting towards you by holding one hand on her chin and with the other hand dangle her snack above her face. Keep saying distinctly and deliberately, “sit up.” Do not force her to sit too long at any one time, but repeat the instruction regularly and reward her regularly with a lot of appreciation and snacks.
Teach Your Fila Brasileiro to Sit: Help Her Stay Balanced
Throughout her initial lesson your Fila Brasileiro will need a surprising amount of assistance from you to keep her from pitching forward, but as she gains better control of her muscles and understands what you want her to do, she will rely less and less on your hand to hold her in position. Then you can gradually give your Fila Brasileiro less help and support till you’ll basically have to leave one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her chin or neck, to be in position to stop her from falling forward; later you can easily take away your hand completely and simply suspend the reward just above the level of her face.
Teach Your Fila Brasileiro To Sit: Remove the Aids Progressively
With regular practice your Fila Brasileiro will stay seated well after you make her. Then she should be set up against a wall, so as to give her help for her back only. After she has gotten the knack of this and can keep her place easily, practice with her using chair legs, cushions or other things that give her less and less assistance. In the end she will master how to sustain her stability and sit without having something to rest on.
Teach Your Fila Brasileiro to Sit: Putting It All Together
During the course of all this training the phrase "sit up" will have been impressed upon her mind through persistent repetition. Last is the final training to teach your Fila Brasileiro to sit up whenever she hears the phrase. There's a great chance, if she has been properly taught, you will just have to summon her out into the room, display to her a treat, hold it up a suitable distance from the floor, say "sit up or sit" and she will do so. Then just give her the snack while still in position.
The only necessity for perfection is to practice with her several times daily until she will sit up when commanded to and without being shown a snack; give her the snacks only after she has adhered to the order.
Teach Your Fila Brasileiro Other Tricks
You have now the foundation for teaching your Fila Brasileiro many other tricks. She now can be taught to beg by moving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she will move in coordination with yours. She also can be taught to salute by moving one paw to the side of her head, or to keep a toy in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other articles of clothing.
In instructing a Fila Brasileiro to submit to being clothed, do not try to make her wear too many items at the same time. Try at first with just a hat. Only after she gets used to that you can put on a coat and progressively introduce her to the other garments.
