This post is about teaching the Sinhala Hound to jump for agility. We are often asked, “What number of jumps should I begin with?” You can’t ever have enough solo jumps to learn agility. A good starting point is four jumps. This is the absolute minimum number of jumps suggested.
Teaching Your Sinhala Hound jumping: Start with 4
You can teach your Sinhala Hound many exercises, skills, and drills with 4 jumps. Four jumps will let you work on a short jump chute or jump grid. You can practice on a “box” with your jumps and practice handling, collection, and 270 degree jumps. You can teach your Sinhala Hound jumping left and right. You can be outside the box and send your Sinhala Hound or you can handle from the inside of the box. Your jumps can be setup in a lateral row, so that you could practice threadles and serpentines.
Teach a Sinhala Hound 8 Jumps
Go to the next step and work on 8 jumps. Now you can position 2 boxes with 1 introductory jump. Now you’ve multiplied the number of drills that you can try with your Sinhala Hound. Your jump grids can be of typical size and number of jumps. You can even position your jumps in a circle with the jump bars normal to the circle or on the circumference of the circle. This setup also enables you to develop a variety of drills.
Teaching Your Sinhala Hound Double and Triple Jumps
The next level is a double jump and a triple jump. You could chain two or three solo jumps together to make your expanded jump, but having double and triple jumps in your course work is really helpful to practice. We’ve seen several Sinhala Hounds run a perfect course and the last obstacle is a triple and the Sinhala Hound is not ready for it, and bang, down comes the bar.
