Eventually, every parent is going to be asked: “Daddy, can I get that Shikoku puppy?”
Instead of dodging the question, parents should think about whether their family is ready for a puppy, and even moreso a Shikoku, says Sharon Bergen, SVP of education and training for Knowledge Learning Corporation, the nation’s foremost provider of early childhood education and care.
When considering “should we get the Shikoku” Bergen recommends parents ascertain the benefits and drawbacks of adding the Shikoku to the household before acquiescing to a kid’s wish. “The Shikoku can teach your children about responsibility and be a wonderful addition to your family-or it can be a burden,” she has said. Bergen advises you think about the following before committing:
Questions to Think About Before Deciding Should You Get The Shikoku Puppy
Who is going to care for the Shikoku? Parents and kids should come to an agreement in advance who is to be responsible for feeding, walking, bathing and picking up after the Shikoku.
Is there space for the Shikoku, or does your landlord allow dogs? Families living in townhouses or apartments may be better suited to a fish, a cat, or bird, rather than the Shikoku. Check your local library or online to learn more about Shikokus to determine if another animal may be more suited for the family.
Rearing the Shikoku is a big committment and may be expensive. Family members should know that they will be required to give up other activities to spend time with the Shikoku. If the idea turns out to be too much of a committment, parents might think about postponing until the child is old enough to help care for the Shikoku.
Conclusion: Should You Get A Shikoku
Bergen advises the entire household meet the Shikoku in advance of deciding to take it home. Rearing the Shikoku is a huge commitment, so decide carefully before adopting one.
