There exists as many methods to raise a Whippet puppy as there are to rearing a child. In reality, one method per household at minimum! However most of us agree that when it concerns kids, many things are universal and indisputable. Here are three things that a great deal of people just do not consider when it comes to raising their Whippets, however. I can’t count how many times have we heard, “My Whippet simply won’t listen to me”, or “He just will not act!”
Whippets don’t understand English until we teach them.
The thing all of us like about Whippet puppies most is the way they live for us, the way they focus all they have on us, the fact that our lives end up being theirs. In the start, they study us to discover our body movement, our facial expressions and our language. Till we teach them the English language, it’s all they have. If we say, “Want to head out?” one day, “Have to go potty?” the next day, and, “Hafta pee?” the 3rd day, if they DO determine what we desire, it is because we have gotten the leash and moved toward the door with a pleased face! If you want to accelerate his training by three-fold, teach him YOUR language. Choose a command for EACH habit and persevere. Teach all in your household to use the exact same words and commands, and your Whippet puppy will surprise you at how much quicker he figures it out.
A young Whippet puppy’s metabolism is racing along faster than we believe.
The more youthful your Whippet is, the faster he is growing, the more food and water he requires to sustain his metabolic process, and the more regularly he needs to go potty. Do not penalize your puppy when he makes a house-breaking mistake. These are YOUR fault. The age of your Whippet in weeks and his size establish how often he must head out. One time an hour is not too much for a big 6-week old puppy, particularly if it is summertime. Whippets enjoy the interesting smells outdoors, so there is no excuse to not have him housebroken by 7-8 weeks of age. Right after a nap, after he eats and after grooming are the crucial times, and he will inform you. If he is happily chewing a toy and gets up unexpectedly with his nose to the floor, move rapidly! And whenever he goes potty outside, praise him to high paradise! “What a great BOY!”, “EXCELLENT go potty!” and the like. Whippets like our happy faces, and they will do anything to get it.
Whippets live for our expressions and body movement.
As a result of this, the worst penalty you ever can offer your Whippet is a grimace and to turn away from him. You can see his tail drop and his face get so sad. He will figure out the lesson, I guarantee it. However his attention span is just 3-5 minutes, so do not spurn him any further. Love him up and give him your happy face once again. Physical penalty is never required. Employ consistent commands and caring praise and he will know what you desire of him prior to you know. He will become a master of your body movement and expressions in no time at all.
Naturally there are many aspects of training your Whippet puppy well. Caring compassion works just as well for Whippet pups as it does with children, developing a delighted, well-adjusted and loyal dog for life. These three important tips, utilized regularly with confidence, will start him well on his way.
