Sitting is one of the 1st skills that you should teach to your Slovakian Rough-Haired Pointer and forms the foundation for many other techniques. To train a Slovakian Rough-Haired Pointer to sit up, prep some snacks as a reward, and set the Slovakian Rough-Haired Pointer on her backside in the corner, to make sure that she can not fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no room to stumble.
Teach Your Slovakian Rough-Haired Pointer to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Command
Prevent her from pitching towards you by holding 1 hand beneath her chin and using your second hand dangle her reward above your Slovakian Rough-Haired Pointer’s nose. Keep repeating deliberately and clearly, “sit up.” Do not force her to sit up for too long at one time, but repeat the lesson regularly and reward her frequently with a lot of adoration and treats.
Teach Your Slovakian Rough-Haired Pointer to Sit: Help Her Stay Balanced
In the 1st lesson she will need quite a bit of help from you to keep her from falling forward, but as she gets control of the stabilizing muscles and starts to understand what you want, she’ll count less and less on your hand to hold her in position. Gradually, you can give your Slovakian Rough-Haired Pointer less assistance till you’ll only have to leave one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her neck or chin, to be available to prevent her falling forward; in the future you will be able to take away your hand completely and just hold the reward just over the level of her face.
Teach Your Slovakian Rough-Haired Pointer To Sit: Remove the Assistance Progressively
After regular practice she will stay seated for a long time after you command her. Then she should be set up against the wall, so as to provide her a support for her back only. Once she has gotten the hang of this and can hold her position easily, practice with her using chair legs, cushions or other things that give her less and less help and support. Subsequently she will learn how to preserve her balance and sit up without anything to lean against.
Teach Your Slovakian Rough-Haired Pointer to Sit: Putting It All Together
During the course of all this training the words "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her mind by regular repetition. Last here's the final lesson to teach your Slovakian Rough-Haired Pointer to sit up immediately after she hears the command. Chances are, if she has been carefully trained, you will merely have to call her out into the room, show a treat, hold it up a reasonable distance from the floor, say "sit" and she'll do so. Then just give her the reward while still in place.
The only requirement for flawlessness is to rehearse with her multiple times daily until she will sit when told and without being shown a treat; give her the rewards only after she has complied with the command.
Teach Your Slovakian Rough-Haired Pointer Other Tricks
You have now the technique for teaching your Slovakian Rough-Haired Pointer many other skills. She can now learn how to beg by moving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she will move in coordination with yours. She also can learn to salute by bringing one paw up to the side of her head, or to keep something in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other clothes.
In instructing a Slovakian Rough-Haired Pointer to tolerate being dressed up, don't try to get her to wear too many things at once. Try at first with a hat. Only after she becomes used to that you can put on a jacket and slowly introduce her to the other clothing.
