Are you aiming to teach your Scotch Collie to sit? The technique of sitting up is regularly taught to very small dogs, however larger pet dogs are a different story. It is challenging for them to maintain their equilibrium.
Teach Your Scotch Collie to Sit: Foundation
Sitting up is one of the most basic skills that should be taught to your Scotch Collie and lays the groundwork for several other tricks. To train a Scotch Collie to sit up, prepare some treats as a reward, and put the Scotch Collie on her butt in the corner, to ensure she is not able to fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no room to lose balance.
Teach Your Scotch Collie to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Command
Stop her from pitching forward by maintaining one hand underneath her chin and with your second hand hold the snack above her nose. Keep saying distinctly and intelligibly, “sit up.” Do not make her sit too long at any one time, however repeat the lesson often and reward her frequently with plenty of appreciation and snacks.
Teach Your Scotch Collie to Sit: Help Her Balance
During her initial lesson your Scotch Collie will require quite a bit of support from you to prevent her from falling forward, but as she gets more control of her balancing muscles and recognizes what you want, she’ll depend less and less upon your hand to hold her steady. Then you can gradually give her less help and support till you will only have to leave one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her neck or chin, to be in position to prevent her from falling forward; eventually you may take away your hand completely and just simply hold the reward right above the level of her head.
Teach Your Scotch Collie To Sit: Remove the Aids Incrementally
After regular practice she will stay seated for a good while after you set her up. Afterward she should be set against a wall, so as to provide her a support for her back. When she has grasped this and can maintain her posture easily, rehearse with her using chair legs, cushions or other things that offer her less and less aid. In the end she will learn to keep her stability and sit up without relying on something to rest on.
Teach Your Scotch Collie to Sit: Putting It All Together
Throughout all these lessons the words "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her subconscious through persistent repetition. Lastly comes the final training to teach your Scotch Collie to sit up immediately after she hears the phrase. It's highly likely, if she has been diligently taught, you will simply have to get her out into the room, show a reward, hold it up a reasonable distance from the ground, say "sit up" and she will obey. Then you'll just give her the snack while still in position.
The only criteria for perfection is to rehearse with her multiple times daily until she sits up when commanded to and without being shown a snack; give her the rewards only after she has adhered to the direction.
Teach Your Scotch Collie Other Tricks
You have now the foundation for teaching your Scotch Collie many other skills. She now can learn to beg by moving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she will move in rhythm with yours. She also can be taught to salute by bringing one paw to the side of her head, or to hold a wooden pipe in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other articles of clothing.
In teaching a Scotch Collie to tolerate being dressed up, don't try to get her to wear too many clothes at one time. Try her at first with a hat. Once she gets adjusted to that you can put on a jacket and little by little introduce her to more clothing.
