Are you aiming to teach your Pug to sit? The talent of sitting up is easily taught to small dogs, but much bigger canines are another story. It is tricky for them to keep their equilibrium.
Teach Your Pug to Sit: Preparing
Sitting up is one of the fundamental skills that you should teach to your Pug and forms the foundation for various other tricks. To train a Pug to sit up, organize some treats as a reward, and put the Pug on her backside in a corner, so she can’t fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no space to lose balance.
Teach Your Pug to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Sound of The Words
Stop her from falling towards you by securing one hand beneath her chin and with your second hand hold the reward above your Pug’s face. Keep repeating intelligibly and clearly, “sit up.” Don’t force her to sit too long at one time, however repeat the lesson regularly and reward her frequently with a lot of recognition and treats.
Teach Your Pug to Sit: Help Her Keep Her Balance
In the beginner lesson she will call for considerable support from you to keep her from tumbling forward, but as she gets better control of her stabilizing muscles and starts to understand what you want her to do, she will count less upon your hand to hold her steady. Gradually, you can give her less help until you will just have to leave one hand in position two or three inches from her neck or chin, to be in position to stop her falling forward; in the future you can easily take away your hand completely and just simply dangle the treat just above the height of her face.
Teach Your Pug To Sit: Remove the Help Progressively
After frequent practice your Pug will stay seated long after you make her. Then she should be set against the wall, so as to offer her assistance for her back. Soon after she has soaked up this and can keep her posture effortlessly, rehearse with her using chair legs, pillows or other items that offer her less and less aid. Eventually she will figure out how to sustain her balance and sit without anything to lean against.
Teach Your Pug to Sit: Putting It All Together
During the course of all this training the command "sit up" will have been impressed upon her mind with the assistance of regular repetition. Now here's the final lesson to teach your Pug to sit up whenever she hears the phrase. There's a great chance, if she has been diligently trained, you will simply have to get her out into the room, show her a reward, hold it up a suitable distance from the ground, say "sit" and she will obey. Then give her the treat while still in position.
The only prerequisite for excellence is to rehearse with your Pug several times a day until she will sit up on command and without being shown a reward; give her the rewards only once she has followed the order.
Teach Your Pug Other Tricks
You have now the groundwork for teaching your Pug many other tricks. She can now learn to beg by waving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she'll move in rhythm with yours. She can also learn to salute by moving one paw to the side of her head, or to hold an object in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other clothes.
While teaching a Pug to accept being clothed, don't try to make her wear too many garments at one time. Try her at first with just a hat. Soon after she gets used to that you could put on a coat and eventually introduce her to more clothes.
