Are you working to teach your Kumaon Mastiff to sit? The talent of sitting up is quite easily taught to little dogs, yet bigger pet dogs are a different story. It’s tricky for them to keep their equilibrium.
Teach Your Kumaon Mastiff to Sit: Prep work
Sitting up is one of the very first skills that you should teach to your Kumaon Mastiff and is the foundation for numerous other skills. In order to train a Kumaon Mastiff to sit up, organize some treats as a reward, and put your Kumaon Mastiff on her haunches in the corner, so that she can’t fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no room to stumble.
Teach Your Kumaon Mastiff to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Command
Protect her from falling to the front by sticking your hand under her chin and using the other hand dangle the snack above the Kumaon Mastiff’s nose. Keep repeating clearly and deliberately, “sit.” Don’t make her sit too long at one time, but repeat the training often and reward her frequently with a lot of recognition and snacks.
Teach Your Kumaon Mastiff to Sit: Help Her Balance
In her beginner lesson your Kumaon Mastiff will require significant support from you to stop her from pitching forward, but as she gains control of her stabilizing muscles and sees what you want her to do, she will depend less on your hand to hold her in position. Gradually, you can give her less assistance up until you’ll merely have to keep one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her chin or neck, to be in position to prevent her falling forward; later you can easily take away the hand altogether and just simply suspend the reward just above the height of her head.
Teach Your Kumaon Mastiff To Sit: Remove the Assistance Incrementally
With regular training your Kumaon Mastiff will sit up for a long time after you tell her to. The next step is she should be set up against a wall, so as to provide her a support for her back. After she has figured out this and can maintain her place effortlessly, practice with her using chair legs, pillows or other objects that provide her less and less aid. In time she will learn to sustain her balance and sit without having something to lean on.
Teach Your Kumaon Mastiff to Sit: Putting It All Together
Throughout all these lessons the phrase "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her psyche by means of constant repetition. Lastly is the final training to teach your Kumaon Mastiff to sit up right after she hears the words. Chances are, if she has been properly instructed, you will only have to get her out into the room, show a treat, hold it up a suitable distance from the floor, say "sit up" and she'll do so. Then just give her the treat while still in place.
The only prerequisite for excellence is to rehearse with your Kumaon Mastiff several times daily until she can sit up on command and without being shown a reward; give her the snacks only after she has complied with the order.
Teach Your Kumaon Mastiff Other Tricks
You have now the groundwork for teaching your Kumaon Mastiff many other skills. She can now learn to beg by moving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she'll move in coordination with yours. She also can learn to salute by bringing one paw to the side of her head, or to keep a toy in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other articles of clothing.
While teaching a Kumaon Mastiff to tolerate being clothed, don't try to get her to wear too many garments at one time. Try at first with a cap. Once she becomes familiar with that you can put on a jacket and little by little introduce her to the other garments.
