In order to train a Deutsche Bracke to sit up, prepare some treats as a perk, and place the Deutsche Bracke on her haunches in the corner, to ensure she is not able to fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no room to lose balance.

Teach Your Deutsche Bracke to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Words

Prevent her from falling to the front by sticking one hand beneath her chin and with the second hand dangle her treat above the Deutsche Bracke’s nose. Keep saying intelligibly and clearly, “sit.” Don’t force her to sit too long at any one time, however repeat the instruction routinely and reward her often with a lot of appreciation and snacks.

Teach Your Deutsche Bracke to Sit: Help Her Keep Her Balance

During the first lesson she will require a lot of assistance from your hand to stop her from tumbling forward, but as she gets more control of the muscles and is aware of what you want, she will rely less on your hand to hold her steady. Then you can gradually give her less help and support til you’ll only have to leave one hand in position two or three inches from her chin or neck, to be ready to prevent her falling forward; eventually you can easily remove the hand entirely and just suspend the reward just over the level of her face.

With frequent training she will sit up well after you set her up. Afterward she should be set up against your wall, so as to offer her a support for her back. Once she has picked up this and can maintain her place effortlessly, rehearse with her up against chair legs, cushions or other things that provide her less and less help. At some point she will grasp how to keep her stability and sit up in the absence of something to lean on.




Teach Your Deutsche Bracke to Sit: Putting It All Together

During all these lessons the phrase "sit up" will have been impressed upon her subconscious through constant repetition. Now here's the final lesson to teach your Deutsche Bracke to sit up right after she hears the command. It's highly likely, if she has been properly taught, you will just have to call her out into the room, display to her a treat, hold it up a reasonable distance from the ground, say "sit up" and she will obey. Then you'll just give her the snack while still in place.

The only necessity for perfection is to practice with your Deutsche Bracke several times daily until she sits up when commanded to and without being shown a snack; give her the rewards only once she has adhered to the direction.

Teach Your Deutsche Bracke Other Tricks

You have now the technique for teaching your Deutsche Bracke many other skills. She can now learn to beg by moving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she will move in conjunction with yours. She also can learn to salute by moving one paw up to the side of her head, or to keep a wooden pipe in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other articles of clothing.

While teaching a Deutsche Bracke to submit to being dressed up, don't try to make her wear too many clothes simultaneously. Try her at first with just a hat. Soon after she gets familiar with that you can put on a jacket and steadily introduce her to the other clothing.
