Teach Your Bolognese to Sit: Preparing
Sitting is one of the initial skills that should be taught to your Bolognese and lays the groundwork for various other skills. To train a Bolognese to sit up, organize some snacks as a perk, and put your Bolognese on her backside in the corner, to ensure she can’t fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no room to stumble.
Teach Your Bolognese to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Command
Keep her from falling to the front by keeping your hand underneath her chin and with your second hand dangle the treat above her face. Keep saying intelligibly and clearly, “sit up.” Do not force her to sit up too long at one time, but do repeat the instruction routinely and reward her frequently with lots of praise and treats.
Teach Your Bolognese to Sit: Help Her Keep Her Balance
During the 1st lesson your Bolognese will require a lot of help from you to prevent her from tumbling forward, but as she gains more control of the muscles and makes sense of what you want, she will count less upon your hand to hold her steady. Gradually, you can give her less help and support up until you will merely have to leave one hand in position two or three inches from her chin or neck, to be ready to stop her falling forward; later you can probably remove your hand altogether and simply suspend the snack right above the level of her head.
Teach Your Bolognese To Sit: Remove the Assistance Gradually Over Time
After frequent practice she will stay seated well after you make her. Next she should be set up against a wall, so as to provide her support for her back. After she has understood this and can maintain her position effortlessly, rehearse with her up against chair legs, pillows or other things that offer her less and less aid. Subsequently she will learn how to sustain her stability and sit up without having anything to lean on.
Teach Your Bolognese to Sit: Putting It All Together
During all these lessons the words "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her psyche through constant repetition. Last is the final lesson to teach your Bolognese to sit up immediately after she hears the command. It's highly likely, if she has been properly trained, you will simply have to summon her out in the room, show her a treat, hold it up a reasonable distance from the ground, say "sit up or sit" and she'll do so. Then give her the reward while still in place.
The only prerequisite for perfection is to practice with her several times a day until she can sit up when told and without being shown a reward; give her the treats only after she has followed the direction.
Teach Your Bolognese Other Tricks
You have now the basis for teaching your Bolognese many other tricks. She can now learn to beg by waving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she will move in conjunction with yours. She also can be taught to salute by moving one paw up to the side of her head, or to keep something in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other clothes.
When instructing a Bolognese to tolerate being dressed up, don't try to get her to wear too many garments at one time. Try her at first with just a cap. After she gets adjusted to that you can put on a jacket and slowly and gradually introduce her to more garments.
