Teach Your Berger Picard to Sit: Groundwork
Sitting is one of the very first techniques that you should teach to a Berger Picard and forms the groundwork for plenty of other techniques. To train a Berger Picard to sit up, organize some treats as a reward, and put your Berger Picard on her rump in the corner, to make sure that she can not fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no space to stumble.
Teach Your Berger Picard to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Command
Prevent her from tilting towards you by keeping your hand beneath her chin and with your other hand dangle the snack above the Berger Picard’s nose. Keep repeating deliberately and clearly, “sit.” Do not make her sit up for too long at any one time, but do repeat the lesson often and reward her regularly with lots of kudos and treats.
Teach Your Berger Picard to Sit: Help Her Balance
During the very first lesson she will demand a surprising amount of help from your hand to prevent her from tumbling forward, but as she gains better control of the stabilizing muscles and grasps what you want, she will count less upon your hand to keep her in position. Gradually, you can give your Berger Picard less support up until you’ll merely have to maintain one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her neck or chin, to be ready to prevent her falling forward; in the future you can easily withdraw your hand completely and just hold the treat just above the height of her head.
Teach Your Berger Picard To Sit: Remove the Aids Over Time
After steady training your Berger Picard will sit up long after you tell her to. Next she should be set up against a wall, so as to offer her a support for her back. Once she has learned this and can keep her posture effortlessly, practice with her up against chair legs, cushions or other items that offer her less and less assistance. In time she will get the hang of how to keep her balance and sit up without having something to lean against.
Teach Your Berger Picard to Sit: Putting It All Together
Throughout all this training the command "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her mind through frequent repetition. Lastly is the final training to teach your Berger Picard to sit up as soon as she hears the phrase. Most likely, if she has been carefully taught, you will just have to get her out into the room, show to her a treat, hold it up a suitable distance from the ground, say "sit" and she will do so. Then just give her the reward while still in position.
The only necessity for perfection is to rehearse with your Berger Picard several times a day until she will sit up when told and without being shown a reward; give her the snacks only once she has followed the command.
Teach Your Berger Picard Other Tricks
You have now the technique for teaching your Berger Picard many other tricks. She now can be taught how to beg by waving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she will move in sync with yours. She can also be taught to salute by moving one paw up to the side of her head, or to hold something in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothing.
When instructing a Berger Picard to tolerate being dressed up, don't try to make her wear too many things at once. Try her at first with a cap. Once she becomes used to that you can put on a coat and over time introduce her to the other garments.
