Sitting is one of the fundamental techniques that should be taught to a Belgian Shepherd Dog and provides the ground work for various other techniques. In order to train a Belgian Shepherd Dog to sit up, prep some treats as a reward, and put your Belgian Shepherd Dog on her rump in a corner, to make sure that she won’t be able to fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no space to lose balance.

Protect her from tilting to the front by keeping 1 hand underneath her chin and with your second hand dangle her snack above the Belgian Shepherd Dog’s face. Keep repeating distinctly and intelligibly, “sit up.” Do not make her sit too long at one time, but repeat the lesson regularly and reward her often with plenty of adoration and treats.

Throughout her first lesson she will call for considerable help and support from you to stop her from falling forward, but as she gains control of the muscles and learns what you want her to do, she’ll count less on your hand to hold her steady. Gradually, you can give her less assistance til you will simply have to maintain one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her neck or chin, to be available to prevent her from falling forward; eventually you can remove your hand entirely and just suspend the reward just above the level of her head.

Teach Your Belgian Shepherd Dog To Sit: Remove the Help Progressively

With consistent training she will sit up long after you make her. Afterward she should be set against a wall, so as to offer her support for her back. Soon after she has understood this and can hold her posture effortlessly, practice with her up against chair legs, pillows or other objects that provide her less and less aid. In time she will understand how to preserve her equilibrium and sit without something to lean on.
