Are you attempting to teach your Beagle to sit? The talent of sitting up is easily taught to smaller dogs, yet bigger doggies are a different story. It’s tough for them to sustain their balance.
Teach Your Beagle to Sit: Prep work
Sitting is one of the initial techniques that should be taught to a Beagle and is the groundwork for numerous other tricks. To train a Beagle to sit up, organize some snacks as a reward, and put the Beagle on her backside in the corner, to ensure that she can’t fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no room to lose balance.
Teach Your Beagle to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Phrase
Keep her from pitching towards you by maintaining one hand beneath her chin and with the other hand dangle her snack above your Beagle’s nose. Keep repeating deliberately and distinctly, “sit.” Don’t force her to sit up too long at one time, but do repeat the lesson routinely and reward her regularly with lots of kudos and snacks.
Teach Your Beagle to Sit: Help Her Maintain Balance
In her beginner lesson she will demand considerable help and support from you to keep her from falling forward, but as she gets better control of the stabilizing muscles and sees what you want her to do, she will rely less upon your hand to hold her steady. Gradually, you can give her less help and support til you will basically have to leave one hand in position two or three inches from her neck or chin, to be in place to prevent her from falling forward; later on you can remove the hand and just simply suspend the reward right above the level of your Beagle’s face.
Teach Your Beagle To Sit: Remove the Assistance Gradually Over Time
After regular practice your Beagle will sit up for a good while after you get her to sit. Next she should be set up against your wall, so as to give her support for her back only. After she has learned this and can keep her posture easily, rehearse with her using chair legs, pillows or other objects that give her less and less support. Eventually she will be trained to maintain her equilibrium and sit up without anything to lean against.
Teach Your Beagle to Sit: Putting It All Together
During the course of all these lessons the command "sit up" will have been impressed upon her psyche with the assistance of constant repetition. Lastly here's the final lesson to teach your Beagle to sit up as quickly as she hears the phrase. It's highly likely, if she has been properly trained, you will only have to summon her out into the room, show a snack, hold it up a suitable distance from the floor, say "sit up" and she will do so. Then you'll just give her the reward while still in position.
The only prerequisite for flawlessness is to train with her multiple times a day until she will sit up on command and without being shown a reward; give her the snacks only after she has complied with the order.
Teach Your Beagle Other Tricks
You have now the fundamentals for teaching your Beagle many other tricks. She now can be taught how to beg by waving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she will move in coordination with yours. She also can be taught to salute by bringing one paw to the side of her head, or to hold an object in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other clothing.
While training a Beagle to submit to being dressed up, don't try to get her to wear too many things at the same time. Try her at first with just a hat. Once she gets accustomed to that you can put on a jacket and steadily introduce her to more garments.
Take pleasure in "teaching your Beagle the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun in the process!
