Are you struggling to teach your American Akita to sit? The technique of sitting up is easily taught to compact dogs, yet bigger pet dogs are another story. It’s difficult for them to maintain their equilibrium.
Teach Your American Akita to Sit: Anticipation
Sitting is one of the 1st skills that you should teach to a American Akita and lays the ground work for quite a few other skills. To train a American Akita to sit up, organize some snacks as a perk, and put your American Akita on her butt in a corner, so that she can’t fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no room to stumble.
Teach Your American Akita to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Words
Stop her from tilting forward by securing 1 hand under her chin and with the other hand dangle the treat above her face. Keep repeating clearly and deliberately, “sit up.” Do not force her to sit too long at one time, but do repeat the lesson often and reward her frequently with lots of recognition and treats.
Teach Your American Akita to Sit: Help Her Keep Her Balance
Throughout her very first lesson your American Akita will demand a surprising amount of support from your hand to prevent her from falling forward, but as she gets more control of her stabilizing muscles and recognizes what you want, she’ll rely less and less on your hand to hold her steady. Gradually, you can give your American Akita less help and support till you’ll basically have to keep one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her chin or neck, to be available to prevent her from falling forward; in the future you might remove your hand and simply suspend the reward just over the height of your American Akita’s head.
Teach Your American Akita To Sit: Remove the Assistance Gradually
After constant training she will sit up well after you get her to sit. Afterward she should be set against a wall, so as to provide her support for her back only. Once she has soaked up this and can hold her position effortlessly, rehearse with her using chair legs, pillows or other items that provide her less and less help and support. Sooner or later she will understand how to maintain her balance and sit without something to lean on.
Teach Your American Akita to Sit: Putting It All Together
Throughout all these lessons the phrase "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her psyche through persistent repetition. Lastly is the final lesson to teach your American Akita to sit up immediately after she hears the command. There's a great chance, if she has been properly trained, you will simply have to get her out in the room, show her a treat, hold it up a suitable distance from the floor, say "sit up" and she'll do so. Then you'll just give her the treat while still in position.
The only requirement for flawlessness is to train with her several times daily until she sits when commanded to and without being shown a snack; give her the snacks only after she has followed the order.
Teach Your American Akita Other Tricks
You have now the foundation for teaching your American Akita many other tricks. She now can be taught how to beg by moving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she'll move in sync with yours. She also can be taught to salute by moving one paw up to the side of her head, or to keep something in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other articles of clothing.
In instructing a American Akita to submit to being dressed up, do not try to make her wear too many garments at the same time. Try at first with a cap. Once she becomes familiar with that you could put on a coat and over time introduce her to the other clothes.
