Are you aiming to teach your Schweizer Laufhund to sit? The skill of sitting up is easily taught to little dogs, yet much larger canines are another story. It’s hard for them to keep their equilibrium.
Teach Your Schweizer Laufhund to Sit: Anticipation
Sitting up is one of the fundamental techniques that you should teach to a Schweizer Laufhund and lays the ground work for numerous other techniques. To train a Schweizer Laufhund to sit up, organize some treats as a reward, and place your Schweizer Laufhund on her rump in the corner, so she can’t fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no room to lose balance.
Teach Your Schweizer Laufhund to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Phrase
Keep her from pitching to the front by securing 1 hand beneath her chin and with the other hand hold her reward above the Schweizer Laufhund’s face. Keep saying clearly and deliberately, “sit.” Don’t make her sit too long at any one time, however repeat the instruction frequently and reward her often with loads of recognition and treats.
Teach Your Schweizer Laufhund to Sit: Help Her Keep Her Balance
In the beginner lesson your Schweizer Laufhund will require a surprising amount of help from your hand to stop her from tumbling forward, but as she gets better control of the balancing muscles and realizes what you want her to do, she will count less and less upon your hand to keep her in position. Then you can gradually give your Schweizer Laufhund less support til you’ll only have to maintain one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her neck or chin, to be waiting to stop her from falling forward; in the future you can probably withdraw this hand completely and merely suspend the snack just over the level of your Schweizer Laufhund’s head.
Teach Your Schweizer Laufhund To Sit: Remove the Help Progressively
After consistent training she will sit up for a good while after you get her to sit. Then she should be set against the wall, so as to offer her help for her back only. Immediately after she has picked up this and can maintain her place effortlessly, rehearse with her using chair legs, cushions or other things that offer her less and less help and support. Gradually she will get the hang of how to maintain her stability and sit without having anything to rest against.
Teach Your Schweizer Laufhund to Sit: Putting It All Together
During the course of all this training the command "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her mind with the assistance of regular repetition. Now is the final training to teach your Schweizer Laufhund to sit up right after she hears the words. There's a good chance, if she has been carefully taught, you will only have to get her out in the room, display to her a snack, hold it up a suitable distance from the floor, say "sit" and she'll do so. Then give her the snack while still in place.
The only requirement for excellence is to rehearse with your Schweizer Laufhund multiple times a day until she will sit when told and without being shown a snack; give her the treats only once she has complied with the command.
Teach Your Schweizer Laufhund Other Tricks
You have now the basis for teaching your Schweizer Laufhund many other skills. She now can learn to beg by moving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she'll move in conjunction with yours. She also can be taught to salute by bringing one paw up to the side of her head, or to keep a wooden pipe in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothes.
When instructing a Schweizer Laufhund to tolerate being clothed, don't try to get her to wear too many garments at once. Try at first with just a hat. Once she becomes used to that you could put on a coat and little by little introduce her to more garments.
