Are you trying to teach your Japanese Terrier to sit? The skill of sitting up is quite easily taught to compact dogs, but much bigger pooches are another story. It’s problematic for them to sustain their balance.
Teach Your Japanese Terrier to Sit: Prep work
Sitting up is one of the fundamental skills that should be taught to your Japanese Terrier and provides the foundation for many other techniques. In order to train a Japanese Terrier to sit up, put together some treats as a perk, and place the Japanese Terrier on her haunches in the corner, to make sure that she is not able to fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no room to stumble.
Teach Your Japanese Terrier to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Command
Prevent her from falling towards you by holding one hand beneath her chin and with the second hand hold her snack above her nose. Keep repeating clearly and deliberately, “sit up.” Don’t force her to sit too long at any one time, but do repeat the lesson routinely and reward her regularly with a lot of approval and treats.
Teach Your Japanese Terrier to Sit: Help Her Keep Her Balance
Throughout the first lesson your Japanese Terrier will demand significant support from you to keep her from falling forward, but as she gets better control of her balancing muscles and realises what you want her to do, she’ll count less on your hand to keep her in position. Then you can gradually give her less help and support up until you will only have to maintain one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her neck or chin, to be set to stop her from falling forward; eventually you may remove your hand altogether and merely hold the treat right over the level of her face.
Teach Your Japanese Terrier To Sit: Remove the Assistance Over Time
After constant practice she will sit up well after you set her up. The next step is she should be set up against a wall, so as to provide her help for her back. Immediately after she has figured out this and can hold her posture effortlessly, rehearse with her against chair legs, pillows or other objects that give her less and less help and support. In time she will be able to maintain her stability and sit up without relying on something to lean on.
Teach Your Japanese Terrier to Sit: Putting It All Together
During the course of all these lessons the words "sit up" will have been instilled upon her mind by persistent repetition. Now is the final lesson to teach your Japanese Terrier to sit up right after she hears the command. Most likely, if she has been properly trained, you will only have to summon her out into the room, reveal to her a snack, hold it up a suitable distance from the floor, say "sit up" and she'll obey. Then you give her the reward while still in position.
The only prerequisite for flawlessness is to rehearse with her multiple times a day until she can sit on command and without being shown a reward; give her the snacks only once she has complied with the order.
Teach Your Japanese Terrier Other Tricks
You have now the technique for teaching your Japanese Terrier many other skills. She now can be taught how to beg by waving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she'll move in sync with yours. She also can be taught to salute by bringing one paw up to the side of her head, or to hold an object in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other clothing.
In instructing a Japanese Terrier to tolerate being dressed up, don't try to make her wear too many things at one time. Try her at first with a hat. Only after she gets used to that you can put on a coat and eventually introduce her to the other clothes.
Appreciate "teaching your Japanese Terrier the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun at the same time!
