Are you trying to teach your German Wirehaired Pointer to sit? The technique of sitting up is quickly taught to smaller dogs, but much bigger dogs are another story. It is difficult for them to keep their balance.
Teach Your German Wirehaired Pointer to Sit: Foundation
Sitting up is one of the 1st tricks that you should teach to a German Wirehaired Pointer and is the groundwork for many other tricks. To train a German Wirehaired Pointer to sit up, organize some treats as a reward, and set the German Wirehaired Pointer on her haunches in the corner, to ensure that she won’t be able to fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no room to stumble.
Teach Your German Wirehaired Pointer to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Sound of The Words
Prevent her from tilting towards you by holding 1 hand under her chin and with your second hand hold the treat above your German Wirehaired Pointer’s face. Keep saying deliberately and clearly, “sit.” Don’t make her sit too long at any one time, but do repeat the training often and reward her frequently with a lot of appreciation and treats.
Teach Your German Wirehaired Pointer to Sit: Help Her Balance
Throughout her beginner lesson your German Wirehaired Pointer will demand a lot of support from your hand to keep her from tumbling forward, but as she gains control of her muscles and sees what you want her to do, she’ll count less upon your hand to hold her in position. Then you can gradually give her less assistance till you will merely have to maintain one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her chin or neck, to be waiting to stop her from falling forward; eventually you may withdraw your hand and simply hold the snack right above the level of her head.
Teach Your German Wirehaired Pointer To Sit: Remove the Help Gradually
After consistent practice she will stay seated long after you set her up. Next she should be set up against a wall, so as to offer her support for her back. Soon after she has soaked up this and can maintain her posture effortlessly, practice with her up against chair legs, pillows or other objects that give her less and less aid. Sooner or later she will be trained to maintain her equilibrium and sit without something to lean against.
Teach Your German Wirehaired Pointer to Sit: Putting It All Together
During the course of all these lessons the words "sit up" will have been impressed upon her subconscious with the assistance of persistent repetition. Now comes the final lesson to teach your German Wirehaired Pointer to sit up as soon as she hears the phrase. There's a great chance, if she has been carefully instructed, you will just have to call her out in the room, show her a treat, hold it up a suitable distance from the floor, say "sit up or sit" and she will do so. Then you'll give her the reward while still in position.
The only necessity for excellence is to rehearse with her multiple times daily until she will sit when commanded to and without being shown a snack; give her the rewards only after she has obeyed the order.
Teach Your German Wirehaired Pointer Other Tricks
You have now the fundamentals for teaching your German Wirehaired Pointer many other skills. She can now be taught how to beg by moving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she'll move in rhythm with yours. She also can learn to salute by moving one paw to the side of her head, or to hold a wooden pipe in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothing.
While instructing a German Wirehaired Pointer to tolerate being dressed up, don't try to get her to wear too many clothes at one time. Try her at first with just a cap. Once she becomes accustomed to that you could put on a jacket and progressively introduce her to the other clothes.
