Teach Your Bearded Collie to Sit: Prep work
Sitting is one of the most basic techniques that you should teach to a Bearded Collie and forms the groundwork for myriad other tricks. To train a Bearded Collie to sit up, prep some snacks as a reward, and put your Bearded Collie on her backside in the corner, to make sure that she can not fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no room to lose balance.
Teach Your Bearded Collie to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Sound of The Words
Stop her from falling to the front by keeping one hand underneath her chin and using the second hand hold her reward above her nose. Keep saying distinctly and intelligibly, “sit up.” Do not make her sit up for too long at one time, but repeat the instruction regularly and reward her often with a lot of appreciation and treats.
Teach Your Bearded Collie to Sit: Help Her Balance
In her initial lesson she will demand considerable help from your hand to keep her from tumbling forward, but as she gains better control of her muscles and realizes what you want her to do, she’ll depend less on your hand to hold her steady. Gradually, you can give your Bearded Collie less help and support till you’ll only have to maintain one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her chin or neck, to be available to stop her falling forward; later you might remove the hand altogether and just hold the reward right over the level of her face.
Teach Your Bearded Collie To Sit: Remove the Help Progressively
With regular training she will stay seated for a long time after you get her to sit. The next step is she should be set up against the wall, so as to give her a support for her back. Only after she has gotten the knack of this and can maintain her posture easily, rehearse with her against chair legs, pillows or other things that provide her less and less help. Subsequently she will be trained to sustain her equilibrium and sit up without needing something to rest against.
Teach Your Bearded Collie to Sit: Putting It All Together
Throughout all these lessons the words "sit up" will have been impressed upon her mind through constant repetition. Now here's the final training to teach your Bearded Collie to sit up as quickly as she hears the command. There's a good chance, if she has been properly taught, you will only have to call her out into the room, display a reward, hold it up a reasonable distance from the floor, say "sit up" and she will do so. Then you'll give her the snack while still in place.
The only necessity for flawlessness is to rehearse with her several times daily until she can sit when commanded to and without being shown a snack; give her the treats only once she has obeyed the order.
Teach Your Bearded Collie Other Tricks
You have now the method for teaching your Bearded Collie many other tricks. She can now be taught how to beg by moving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she will move in conjunction with yours. She also can learn to salute by moving one paw up to the side of her head, or to keep a wooden pipe in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other clothes.
In instructing a Bearded Collie to tolerate being clothed, do not try to get her to wear too many things at the same time. Try at first with just a cap. Only after she becomes adjusted to that you could put on a jacket and gradually introduce her to the other garments.
