General Bloodhound Obedience Tips

Training has to be a positive and rewarding experience for both you and the Bloodhound. If you are not in the best mood for training, do not even think of starting. Always reward the Bloodhound for heeding your orders to the tee! A prize is anything that your Bloodhound wants and is happy to earn. Food is an obvious prize but other treats could be verbalized commendation and playthings. Many shorter sessions are usually better than one long one. Training mustn’t contain any degrading comments or consequences. There should be no yelling, no hitting or smacking, no chain yanking on training leashes or collars, and absolutely no electricity! Every single training opportunity should be enjoyed and reinforcing with prizes for a job well done.

Training Bloodhounds with head collars

Dragging the lead is one of the few negative requirements of training a new Bloodhound puppy. Using a head collar for Bloodhound training has become very popular in the last few years. Training with a head collar does have some benefits over the usual training collar. Although quite easy to use, it is important that head collars are fit correctly and your Bloodhound systematically introduced to the collar. Head collars are usually more easy to use than a traditional training collar. Head collars are very powerful when guiding Bloodhounds in tricky situations.
