  • 2) Experience. – Inquire about their background, i.e. number of years experience.
  • 3) A genuine love of and devotion to Malteses.
  • 4) Extensive and up to date knowledge. Dedicated trainers keep themselves updated by attending dog training and animal behavior courses, conferences, seminars and workshops.
  • 5) Their training methodology and handling skills. A good trainers first concern should be the Maltese’s well being.
  • 6) Memberships with reputable associations, organizations and training clubs.

General Maltese Obedience Tips

Training has to be a positive and rewarding experience for both you and the Maltese. If you are not in the right mindset for training, don’t even start. Always reward the Maltese for obeying your commands promptly! A prize is anything that your Maltese wants and is willing to earn. Edible treats are a great reward but other treats could be oral admiration and toys. Multiple brief training sessions are demonstrated to be better than a long one. Training shouldn’t involve any negative components or punishment. There should be no yelling, no smacking or hitting, no leash yanking on training chains or collars, and absolutely no electric fences! Each training session must be enjoyed and reinforcing with prizes for jobs well done.

Training Malteses with head collars

Dragging the lead is one of the few negative tasks of raising a new Maltese puppy. Utilizing a head collar for Maltese training has become standard during the last decade. Training with a head collar does have some advantages over the traditional training collar. Although very easy to utilize, it’s imperative that head collars are fitted correctly and your Maltese correctly introduced to the collar. Head collars are typically more intuitive to use than a traditional training collar. Head collars are very powerful when training Malteses in difficult situations.
